President Buhari is in China with a large delegation of ministers and governors to attend the Forum Of China-Africa Cooperation #FOCAC2018. While the president attends the main summit, the ministers and governors have been negotiating deals and agreements on behalf of their states and ministries on the sidelines of the summit.

Edo signs pact with Chinese firm to build Benin port

The Edo state government on Monday signed an agreement with a Chinese firm, China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to build a port on the Benin River.

Governor Godwin Obaseki and the company’s vice president Li Yi signed the agreement for both parties in a ceremony held at the Nigerian Embassy in Beijing, China.

Obaseki said the agreement was to build a port on the Benin River, dredge the river which is a channel of about 40 kilometres, and to build a link road to join the bye pass.

The proposed port would link Lekki deep sea port and help decongest the ports in Lagos, the governor said.

“The company we are working with is the largest investor in the Lekki deep sea port. So the Benin River port is going to be a sister port to the Lekki deep sea port. We expect that up to 30 per cent cargo going to the Lekki deep sea port would be meant for Benin port,” he said.

He added that the construction of the Benin port would also provide opportunities to export agricultural and manufactured products being produced in the in the state.

“We are investing massively on agriculture particularly in areas like oil palm, rubber cassava, fruits and all range of agricultural produce which need to be processed and exported outside the country”

“There are companies operating in the state and are seeking to export their products. The port will provide opportunity not only to export agricultural produce but also some of the products that are now being manufactured in our area,” the governor said.

“Another advantage is that once you create the infrastructure, there is the possibility that other industries would spring up in the state. This opportunity is going to rapidly help in diversifying the economy of Nigeria,” he added.

The biggest representative of Africa and blacks fly around the world begging for funds. Is this something to cheer about? They take loans from the Chinese. They sign the contracts with Chinese companies to build. The Chinese companies build and get paid by the Chinese banks. In all, the money never leaves China but Nigeria is on the hook for the loan. A beggar has no choice and Due Process is flung out of the window. What is in it to rejoice about? Africa has all the minerals for self-sufficiency but don't know how to harness resources and manpower to be affluent. Let me see how Africa will borrow her way to greatness.

Take a closer look at how much the Nigerian government use to service her foreign loans annually. The amount is very staggering and they keep borrowing. Oh well...

Nigerians are cheering their leaders. They should take a cue from Venezuela and Turkey. When the creditors cook up stories to hit Nigeria, will the people be able to live with naira at N1000 per US dollar?

Applaud positive developments. Don't turn yourself into a fool because you think you have to oppose the government. Opposition doesn’t mean lack of understanding of what is good for progress.

I can bet my life...there will be action. It is in China's interest to have a deep water port in Nigeria....1. to in erase their exports to Nigeria and beyond and ....2. to ship raw materials in larger volumes back to China. At the end of the day...do I have to say who is going to control the port?
Well done?...how is Edo/Nigeria going to benefit? ..will they be taxed?/what concessions were they given?
All these agreements.....politicians never go to make market for Nigerian products...never go to get modern equipment and training of our youths to operate them...but always be going to sign MoU set out by China. We are really moving forward...really?
