~There is more to perfume than just spritzing it on and praying the scent will last throughout the day. There are many rules to perfume that people have either never learned or even knew existed. To some people some of the rules of perfume will seem very basic but whether you think you know everything there is about perfume or not, it is likely there are a few(Ooook maybe a heck of a lot) simple hints you may have missed over the years to help you make the most of the scent you wear.

~If you want to buy a fragrance as a gift, you are going to have to do a little snooping. Find out what the individual is/ are already using! Never surprise someone with a fragrance that they aren't familiar with. Chances are, it won't be appreciated. Fragrance is a very personal thing.

~Perfumes smell different on different people. So don’t choose a perfume just because you find it smells good on a friend. Find your own scent.

~If you really want to buy a fragrance as a gift, you are going to have to do a little snooping. Find out what they are already using! Never surprise someone with a fragrance that they aren't familiar with. Chances are, it won't be appreciated. Fragrance is a very personal thing.

~ The scent you wear may not smell the same as you age. Keep this in mind when you go shopping for a new perfume and try a new smell rather than the same thing you bought two decades ago.

~Perfume Types~

Depending on what link you click on the ever dependable internet, you have 5/6/7  basic types of fragrance! I'm going to list the 6 most common ones! Some are a mix of two types. . . Floral  & Fruity,Woody & Floral. It will be  useful to note ther are other types of scents that make up perfume that may not have been mentioned!

~Aromatic Fougère Perfume : These fragrances and perfumes form a universal fragrance family. They take on elements of all the previous categories and blend them into a beautiful bouquet of scents. They contain sexy oriental tones, with Aromatic Herbs and Grasses, Citrus notes, Sweet Spices, Soft Florals and Oriental Woods. This fragrance category has always been the most popular with men. This is because they are zesty, masculine but light, airy and fresh. However, recently they have taken a hold on the female Fine Fragrance market.

Notes
Aromatic Fougère perfume is a natural mix of greens, woods and other earthy scents, which of course would encompass the notes from other families of oriental, woody, fresh and floral. By involving a creative blend of mixed notes, these perfumes are best tested in person, to see if that particular blend is to your liking. Other notes that are more widely used within this family are moss, lavender and cider.

Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent features rich mix of spices and chypre.

~What Are Fragrance Notes?

~All perfumes, irrespective of its flavor and brand, comprises of three different sets of components. These components differ in their evaporation time. These are comprised of many different scents referred to as "notes".  There's Top note,Middle or Heart Note & Base Note.

Top Note are very light and last only 5-10 minutes .The top note consists of small molecules which takes less time for evaporation.

Middle note It emerges when the top notes dissipate. Aroma from this note class vaporizes between two minutes to one hour of its application. So, it is the second aroma felt.  Molecules need more time to evaporate than the top note.  It can last up to an hour or more.

Base note  This is the final aura sensed in a fragrance. It emerges right after the departure of the middle note, usually after the initial half an hour to one hour of the scent application. It takes the longest time to evaporate, so its presence is the last to be noticed. The Base notes are the heavier ingredients or have the majority of fragrance  if you like and can last for several hours.

~In lay man's term, Perfumes work through evaporation.A perfume gets its characteristic smell with the combination of the middle note and base note.

~Allowing a scent to develop is very important. Sometimes you may not like a scent when you first spray it as it smells too strong but after it develops; it may not seem that bad. This holds true even if you like a particular perfume.

~The intensity and longevity of a perfume is based on the concentration, intensity and longevity of each of the aromatic compounds (natural essential oils / perfume oils) used. These are Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum and Eau de Cologne. They are the most famous versions of scented luxury and are most commonly know as EDT, EDP and EDC

~Parfum, EDP, EDT and Cologne perfume terms refer to the strength of the perfume oils. The higher the percentage of oils, the longer the lasting power. The difference is simple a matter of the amount or concentration of oils in the fragrance. The highest concentration is in Pure Parfume, followed by Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, and finally Eau de Cologne and Eau fraiche

~Most manufacturers of designer label perfumes and aftershaves provide various versions of each product. The difference in the products ingredients is what makes the prices considerably expensive or cheaper. For example EDP is always more expensive than EDT even if its the same perfume not taking into account the size of the perfume.

Pure Parfume 22% of essential oils
Eau de Parfum (EDP) between 15 and 22% essential oils
Eau de Toilette (EDT) with 8 to 15% oils
Eau de Cologne has just 4% essential oils.
Eau Fraiche 2-3%

~The percentages sometimes varies according to manufacturer!!

~Ever wondered why your perfume gives out different scents, as time passes by? Ever thought, how the same perfume is able to give out different fragrances? Some of us have a stronger and more repugnant natural body odor than others. Not surprisingly, how someone smells varies from person to person. Our natural body odor changes from day to day slightly as well. Even our mood and attitude can change how we naturally smell. What we eat such as garlic and onion can change the odor our body puts out for a time. Something that smells marvelous in a bottle may not sell marvelous on your body. Perfume is a chemical reaction between two or more different added ingredients. When you add your body's natural chemistry to the equation, the perfume will smell different on you than in the bottle.

Skin Type:Your skin type is a prime factor that decides the type of perfume that you should wear. The presence or lack of oil is responsible for enhancing or reducing the effect of the fragrance. Oily skin can keep the fragrance intact for longer. An extra amount of perfume is necessary for dry skin.

Weather:
Cold weather weakens the scent of perfume. Again, dry skin tends to lose the scent earlier. Hence, try to use extra amount of perfume during winter. It is pleasure to do some experiments on perfume. Instead of wearing the same perfume round the year, you can check out various perfumes during different seasons. Mild perfumes are best choice for summer. Some perfumes also smell different during day and night.

Should I Change My Scent With The Season? Heat intensifies any fragrance and already heavy scents are even stronger in the summer. That's why lighter fragrances with grassy or citrus notes work best in the summer, and heavier fragrances with musky or woodsy notes are better for winter.

Read The Packaging

The packaging can give you a lot of information about how the perfume can smell like. If you wish to choose between light and heady scents, the information on the package is sufficient to tell you what is in the bottle. If you are going for fruity or floral scents, the packages often indicate what the bottle holds. The one’s designed for teens come with sweet, aqueous fragrance and are generally found in shiny, funky bottles.

Making Your Nose Smell Right

~Never try on more than three perfumes in a single day on the same wrist. The nose is wonderful and miraculous, but adding too much to quickly will confuse that smeller. When you try/smell too many perfumes in a day, your senses get confused and you will not really know how your new perfume actually smells. The best way to go about buying a new perfume is by checking a single scent a day and choosing the one you like when you have smelt all of your choices, one at a time.

~Palate Cleansing is done by either taking a break from the scents or smelling coffee beans that are generally provided in all perfume sampling places. Most boutiques provide customers looking for a new perfume with this coffee bean bowl and if they don’t, you will need to take a long break to clear your olfactory senses.

~Go BareUnless you're buying a fragrance you've used already,it's advisable to go bare when shopping for a scent. That means avoid wearing another perfume or any body sprays. It goes without saying that if you mix two scents together you are going to get a third distinct smell. You may initially smell the "new" perfume, but it will only take a few minutes to mix with whatever else you are wearing. As such the combination of two scents may have been nice, but on its own your new perfume may be a terrible scent for you. Also remember that when you try a perfume the best place to test it is on your wrist and try not to rub your wrists together!! Again there's a chance  you're mixing the actual perfume small with your body lotions!!

Re: ~ All You Need To Know Before & After You Buy Your Perfume Or Cologne! ~ by mohawkchic(f): 4:32am On Jul 15, 2010
~Where Should I Apply My Fragrance?
Appling fragrance to your wrists, the sides of your neck, and over your heart naturally intensifies the scent.(A new one for me) That’s why you should put it on your skin, not on your clothes. Also, fragrance mixes with your natural scent creating a slightly unique fragrance. Some people spray it in the air like a clloud & walk into it,some apply behind their knees, ears, elbows,on thier hands, inbetween the cleavage. . .whatever works for you!!

~How Much Fragrance Should I Use?
If people keep asking you what fragrance you are wearing when you walk by, that's a sign you are applying too much. People should have to get close to you to smell your fragrance.Be careful not to over do it. You could end up repelling, not attracting. Wearing excessive perfume can be very uncomfortable and overwhelming for people who spend long periods of time in close contact with you. Sometimes we become unaware of the scent of our own perfume and, in turn, begin to use more and more of it each day. This phenomenon is called Sensory Habituation. Our sense of smell quickly becomes fatigued and we don't realize that the scent is still there and is unpleasantly strong for others. Don't let this happen to you! Remember: when you go to crowded places there will be a large number of other scents floating in the air competing with each other. So be careful!

How Can You Make Your Scent Last Longer?
Fragrances last longer on some people than on others. Those with oily skin will hold a scent longer than those with dry skin. Apply perfume right after you shower or bathe since pores tend to open up after and easily absorb the scent OR Try moisturizing before applying your fragrance. To achieve a longer effect, try layering your fragrance. First use the shower gel; then moisturizer, after shave or powder; and then follow with the same scent Perfume, EDT or Cologne. Also, apply your fragrance low on the body so the scent can rise. Another trick, a light spray on the hair can often last all day.

Can Perfume Damage My Jewelry?
Synthetic ingredients and chemicals found in most bottled fragrances can discolor pearls, diamonds, and gems and tarnish silver! Gold is pretty impervious. Let perfume dry for 10 minutes before adorning yourself.

How Can I Keep My Fragrance From Going Bad?
Storing perfume properly is something almost no one ever does correctly. Even a capped bottle will lose its power and evaporate quicker than you would honestly expect. The best place to store/Keep fragrances is on a shelf in your closet or a similar place that stays primarily cool and dark and away from direct sunlight as this can unbalance the various ingredients!
