Equatorial Guinea Vs Nigeria: AWCON 2018 (0 - 6) On 24th November 2018 by naptu2: 5:42am On Nov 16, 2018
The only two countries that have ever won the African Women’s Nations Cup, the Super Falcons of Nigeria and the Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea, will clash in group B of the 2018 edition of the competition in Ghana. The match will kick off at 5pm on Saturday, November 24th, 2018.

Nigeria lost its first game of the tournament 0-1 to South Africa, but bounced back with a 0-4 victory over Zambia. The Equatorial Guineans have lost both of the matches at the AWCON. They lost to Zambia by a 5-0 scoreline and lost their second game 1-7 to South Africa.

Equatorial Guinea beat Nigeria 1-0 in the semi-finals of the 2008 edition, which they hosted. The goal was scored by Genoveva Anonma Nze.

Nigeria defeated Equatorial Guinea 4-2 in the final of the 2010 edition of the AWCON. Goals by Perpetua Nkwocha and Desire Oparanozie and two own goals by Equatoguinean players ensured that Nigeria regained its title.

The Super Falcons are the most successful African national team (male or female). They have won the African Women's Championship/Nations Cup 10 times; 1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2016 (the 1991 and 1995 editions were played on home and away basis).

The Equatoguineans won the championship in 2008 and 2012, the only two times that Nigeria failed to win it.

Players to watch out for

Nigeria

Asisat Oshoala

Asisat Oshoala is a three time African footballer of the year. She won the award in 2014, 2016 and 2017. She is a striker who can play on the right or centre of the attack (she played as a midfielder in her earlier years).

She was the best player and highest goal scorer at the 2014 FIFA Under 20 World Cup as Nigeria came second in the tournament. She was also the BBC Women's Player of the Year 2015.

Asisat Oshoala obviously loves the AWCON. She was the best player and second highest goal scorer at the 2014 AWCON. She was also the highest goal scorer at the 2016 AWCON as Nigeria successfully defended its title.

Oshoala has also been successful at club level. She was the highest goal scorer in the Nigerian League in 2013. She won the English FA Cup with Arsenal in 2016. She helped Dalian to back to back titles in the Chinese Women's Super League in the 2017 and 2018 seasons. She was also the highest goal scorer in the 2017 season as Dalian won both the league and the cup and she was the second highest goal scorer in the 2018 season.

Oshoala scored a hat trick in the Chinese League three weeks ago and she added another goal two weeks ago to show that she is in the right form for the AWCON.

Desire Oparanozie

Desire Oparanozie is Nigeria’s top 9. She’s like the female Rashidi Yekini. She was the highest goal scorer at the 2014 AWCON in Namibia. She might have been the highest goal scorer at the 2016 AWCON, but she got injured during the tournament. She came back in time to score a free kick goal against South Africa in the semi-final. She scored the only goal in the final that won Nigeria the 2016 AWCON.

Oparanozie has also scored fantastic goals for her French club Guingamp.

Desire Oparanozie's long range goal against Paris FC has been voted the goal of the month for February by readers of international women's football website Women's Soccer United.

Here's a video of the goal.

Desire Oparanozie scored twice in EA Guingamp’s 3-1 victory over Paris FC on February 17th, 2018. She bulldozed her way through the Paris defence to score Guingamp’s equaliser in the 27th minute and in the 89th minute Oparanozie scored from the centre circle to give Guingamp a 3-1 victory.

Ngozi Okobi

Ngozi Okobi’s primary role is as an attacking midfielder for the Super Falcons, but she can play in almost any role in the midfield. She is known for her long range goals, like the spectacular volley that she scored against Kenya in the last AWCON.

Ngozi Okobi played for Delta Queens in the Nigerian League before moving to Washington Spirit in 2015 (following in the footsteps of Francisca Ordega). She moved to Vitssjo in the Swedish league in 2016 before moving to Eskilstuna, also in the Swedish league this year.

Okobi played for the Flamingos at the Under 17 World Cup in 2010 and for the Falconets at the 2012 Under 20 World Cup. She also played for the Super Falcons at the 2015 Women’s World Cup.

Rasheedat Ajibade has been the star of the Nigerian junior national teams (the Flamingos and the Falconets) in the past few years. She played for Nigeria at the 2014 and 2016 Under 17 World Cups. She was the captain of the Flamingos at the 2016 World Cup.

Ajibade made her debut for the Super Falcons at the WAFU Cup competition in 2017. However, Nigeria fielded a home based team at the competition.

Rasheedat Ajibade can play on the left of the attack, the right of the attack or just behind the top striker.

Equatorial Guinea

The Equatoguineans are known for fielding many foreigners in their squad. Some people have even accused them of fielding men in the AWCON.

FIFA rules state that a player must have at least one grandparent from a country before he or she is eligible to play for that country.

Genoveva "Ayo" Anonma Nze

Genoveva Anonma is the 2012 African Women's Footballer of the Year.
