Flood brings pain in Lagos

Residents seek govt help as weekend rain flood ground city
TEARS streaming down her face, Madam Julina Obialla , a resident of Ogungbe Street in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Council of Lagos State on Saturday evening told The Guardian:
“Since the death of my husband three years ago , I have struggled with my children, doing whatever we can including menial jobs to survive. Now, look at what has befallen us. Where do we turn to now? All that we managed to gather over the years have been washed away in the flood.”
The middle-aged woman was lamenting her woes following the rain in Lagos over the weekend and which was light in some areas, was particularly heavy in the mainland,
The rain and flood sort of reminded Lagosians that it was not the dry season yet, that the threat of flooding in many parts of the city remain.
It was also a reminder to government that much more needs to be done to check the menace of flooding.
The menace was real to Madam Obialla and others

When their homes were swamped and property estimated at millions were destroyed.
Residents of Ajegunle, Amukoko Orile, Mushin, Ajah have been counting their losses.
Speaking to The Guardian a victim, Taiwo Lawal said, " The situation here is terrible. We almost lost one a child who was trying to wade though the flood to buy food.”
Even at about 9.00 a.m. yesterday, when The Guardian visited some of the affected areas, residents were still confused over what to do.
Apartments as well as the roads, streets and drainages were still submerged.
In Orile and Ajegunle, angry residents blamed the situation on blocked canals as well as indiscriminate construction of houses without regard to proper planning.
According to Kunle Omolara, a technician who resides in Opeleye Street in Ajegunle, whose shop was destroyed by the flood: “It is unimaginable that the entire area does not have good drainage. Where some drainage channels were provided some years ago, people have either blocked them with refuse or built houses to block them. “This type of destructive flood occurs here every year and the government knows why, yet no one has done anything to save us from hardship.

But, it is our desire that something urgent is done to save our lives and property before we are destroyed by flood.
Government can start by demolishing those illegal structures that block drainages and also open the canal near this area which is covered with silt and grasses such that it even overflows and adds to our problems.”

A commercial motorcyclist, who found it very difficult to wade through the flood yesterday, said: “It is unacceptable that homes are still submerged in Lagos when it can be avoided. houses in Lagos is still happening.
“We do not have functioning canals. the drainages are totally blocked, there are no good roads and no government agency seems to be on alert so that people do not build houses that worsen the flood problem.”.
Another resident said, ”We can no longer cope with the flooding as it has become a nightmare to move around here. We have spent money doing what we can, such as building drains and sand filling but there is a limit to what self-help efforts can do.

”There is need for urgent attention hence we are calling on government to clear the canal to allow free flow of water to avoid future occurrence and salvage the situation and save lives and property

“ It is as if we are forgotten.
The state government should replicate the good work going on elsewhere, here too. In fact, if you juxtapose what Fashola is doing elsewhere with what is happening in Ajegunle, you will wonder if we are part of Lagos State.”

Another resident, Gbenro Olugbenga told The Guardian the flooding seems to get worse every year. He said, ”I have been living here for five years now. It has become extremely difficult for my children to go to school anytime it rains.

Major roads in the area , including sections of Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Apapa Quays and Tin Can Island Port were also affected.
The bad sections were from Coconut Bus Stop to Sunrise
at Berger and at the turn-off to Lagos-Badagry Expressway at Mile Two.
Another area was at Rainbow Bus Stop, stretching towards Sanya Bus Stop.
With the likelihood that more rain would fall in the days ahead, Lagosians are urging the government provide what relief measures it can to residents of the flood-prone areas to save them from hardship.
A parent, Mrs. Ayi Sanwo appealed to parents and guardians in such areas to be at alert so that their children and wards do not play outside when it is raining .
“The children must be kept indoors. They should not be sent on errands nor be allowed to play outside to avoid the risk of their being carried away in the flood.

It has happened before , ” she said.

LOL this is sad. Maybe the GPS station that Fashola is so ecstatic about is supposed to locate where the next flooding will take place.

PAKISTAN

Pakistan flooding death toll hits 1,100

AUG 2010
U.N. estimates some 1 million people nationwide have been affected by the disaster
NOWSHERA, Pakistan — The death toll from massive floods in northwestern Pakistan rose to 1,100 Sunday as rescue workers struggled to save more than 27,000 people still trapped by the raging water.
The rescue effort was aided by a slackening of the monsoon rains that have caused the worst flooding in decades in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa province. But as flood waters started to recede, authorities began to understand the full scale of the disaster.
"Aerial monitoring is being conducted, and it has shown that whole villages have washed away, animals have drowned and grain storages have washed away," said Latifur Rehman, spokesman for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority. "The destruction is massive."

Flooding just means that too much rain overwhelms the available drains. . i dont see what the big deal is

we should be happy ppl were not killed in Lagos, which lies at close to sea level

because ppl in other places are dying and Brazil is definitely richer than Nigeria, but they still suffer death from floods in a major city like rio. . .

@paddy_lo

Yes, flooding happens everywhere, not sure the journalist and Lagos resident are trying to refute that.

People are trying to address the issue of Lagos' drainage system and you're throwing up evidence of flooding across the globe?

Is that supposed to the appease resident's mind? That it also occurs somewhere else in the globe?

Ok oh.
Re: Flood Brings Pain In Lagos by Nobody: 6:12am On Aug 09, 2010
Lagos flooding is avoidable. period. the fact that it happens in other countries doesn't mean we're supposed to fold our arms or feel good about it.

It is important to differentiate between flash floods and flood emanating from poor drainage systems. Flash flood is natural and it is caused by excessive rainfall causing rivers and streams to burst their banks (currently going on in Pakistan and the one in Cumbria, UK last year). It will appear that the one in Lagos which is fairly regular is caused by poor drainage system in the city and can be reduced by investing in total rehabilitation or upgrade of the existing ones and building new ones to effectively drain the whole area into the nearest rivers and lagoons.

once again, i guess i have to point out the fact that lagos is a coastal city in a tropical country noted for heavy rains.

you feel a drainage system will totally eradicate flooding during the rainy season, right?

i guess you're thinking of moses parting the red sea/stopping the flow of water or something. Complaining because you didnt see a miracle.

but it doesnt occur to you to consider the issues of overcrowding and the architecture of the area.
Re: Flood Brings Pain In Lagos by Fhemmmy: 2:57pm On Aug 09, 2010
If the kinda rain in Pakistan hits Nigeria, i am sure we would not have a place to be, cos the drainage system are not only bad, even our roads will be washed off in few seconds.

Typical NL mentality. Because there are ghettos in the US, Nigerian ghettos should be ignored.

Since it is claimed that the roads are working or being worked on, I am wondering why almost 4 years later, we are still dealing with flooding no different than before this period.
