Thursday, 07 October 2010 01:00 Ruqayyah Yusuf Aliyu, Kano

The Saudi Arabian government has reintroduced free Islamic education for some Islamic scholars and students in Kano. The programme, Daura, introduced 30 years ago, was initially suspended for the past eight years.

Speaking during the closing ceremony of the 32nd Daura training program organized by the Islamic University of Medina at the Kano State Government House yesterday, the governor, Mal. Ibrahim Shekarau urged the beneficiaries to ensure good conduct in line with the knowledge acquired during the programme.

Shekarau commended Saudi Arabia for providing free education to Muslim communities, saying such gesture was one of the highest contributions one could offer to fellow human beings.

He said basic Islamic education was an important factor in full institutionalization of the Shari’ah legal system in any society, adding that the state government was willing to work with organizations and institutions that can supplement its efforts in the provision of sound knowledge to the populace.

Speaking earlier, leader of the programme, Dr. Muhammad Abdallah Dharban Alghamidi, said they were in Kano to continue with the training programme as requested by state governor.

Dharban said the aim of the programme was to among other things bring unity among Muslim communities as well as propagate Islam across the globe through training in line with the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the prophet of Islam. He said over 150 countries are undergoing different courses under similar programmes coordinated by the University of Madina and sponsored by the Saudi government.

Basically, he means that will increase the number of the almajiris whom they use as a ready source of cannon fodder for any religious riots.

Unity in the form of increasing the number of scholars who believes if they kill one "arine" (non-believer) , that heaven and 70 virgins await them. Some unity I must say.

Why do Nigerian christians suspect any move by the Islamic world to help their Naija brothers in Islam as a ploy to help train them as terrorists?. I see this as a scholarship to kano indigenes to go and study abroad(possibly a better Islamic education) so they can go home and teach other Islamic faithfuls. University of Medina is the Harvard of Middle East.

This has nothing to do with suspicion. Unless if this school is any different from the "makaranta alo" that is at every nook and cranny in the northern states , then its not mere suspicion. We all know what kind of products those schools spew out.

Whats this about a scholarship abroad, maybe I missed that grin I thot the schooling or watever they do will be in Kano state undecided

The reason why I am suspect of this is due to the fact that the Saudis practice a more radical form of Islam. So of course people should be worried when they get involved in other affairs. We do not need anymore Muslim Fundamentalism in this country.

Graduates from the school usually head to University of Medina for further studies. Shouldn't that be a welcome development or do you want them to hang around Kano as almajiris sniffing gutter?

I dont give a damn if they sniff gutter or glue.

Unless the University of Medina is known for its moderate stance in Islamic beliefs , why should that make me tear my pants in joy?

Ignorance isn't just a disease but a virus that affects every single cell of the brain. You call yourself a xtian and spew this amount of hatred against the Islamic religion. Your mode of reasoning is a disgrace to those in the xtian faith who preach religious tolerance.

In every corner of Nigeria, those who foment the most trouble are the unlettered and uneducated ones who often have no stable means of lively-hood. Be it in the North (kaduna), southwest (Oyo), south east (Abia) or South-South, the illiterate ones are the ones used to cause most harms and even suffer most of the casualties.

Thousands of Nigerians have been going to Saudi to further their studies in Islamic studies, Engineering, Sciences, Administration etc absolutely FREE (and even get paid some stipends for their upkeep while studying) and have become far better citizens than they were while in Nigeria suffering without any job. In fact the Saudi government pays for their flight tickets from and back to Nigeria. The idle mind, I thought, is supposed to be the devil's workshop.

The Saudi Arabians should be commended for coming to assist where our government have failed. If you need to learn more go to Google and find out instead of running from post to pillar spitting hatred, malice and ill-informed bias against the Islamic religion and other ethnic groups.

U should stuff urself with your crap.

When u say unlettered and uneducated , what do u exactly mean? Unlettered or uneducated in WHAT Islamic studies?  If U claim that the almajiris are unlettered and uneducated in Islamic studies, then U are lying thru your teeth. Ever heard of "makaranta alo" in the North?  Who do U think are the scholars in these schools? And what do u think is being taught in these schools? I will give U a clue. It aint science nor arts.

If the scholarship promotes tolerance amongst other religion(s), tell us that and I will withdraw my comments. Thats my concern, how is the scholarship different than what we already have? If not , why dont u just figure out how to reduce the frequency of religious riots in the North instead of coming here to spew nonsense.

Everytime someone  points out the fact that the muslim community  always starts poo in the North, U guys always accuse the fellow of religious intolerance. How convenient.

No need to attack the guy over this thing. Thousands of Northerners studied Medicine, computer programming, Engineering and other natural sciences through Islamic scholarships. Are you doubting that?

Nigeria has had more than its fair share of religion induced carnage. The whole world is aware of this. I don't think it is out of place for xtians to be suspicious of another nation sponsoring religious education in a region that is volatile.

What the North really needs is proper education.

It appears you have never lived in Nigeria, don't follow the news or just plain mischievious. Are you not familiar with the practice of parents in the North leaving their children to be raised by islamic scholars? These kids then become willing tools of evil masters who use them to forment trouble during religious disturbances where fellow citizens are butchered. There is nothing wrong with religious education but there is everything wrong with it if innocent people have to die each time there is a religious crisis.
Re: Saudi Reintroduces Free Islamic Education For Kano Indigenes by Dede1(m): 12:30pm On Oct 09, 2010
Nigeria is in a depthless pit of social decadence because Nigerians do not pay rapt attention to history. In the early 60s, it was a Saudi Arabian professor of Arabic Studies at ABU, Zaria that introduced Islamic radicalism to the school. I have nothing against Islamic religion but have everything against it when members of the sect use it as a tool of violence.
Re: Saudi Reintroduces Free Islamic Education For Kano Indigenes by T9ksy(m): 1:39pm On Oct 09, 2010
Gosh, this is so very sad.

In the 50's when the south was agitating for self-govt. from the brits, the north shamelessly admitted that they were
not ready due to the lack of educated people in their region. In the end, a compromise was reached whereby the north will assume the mantle of leadership with the hope that within a short span of time, the north will catch up with his more educated and progressive southern counterpart.

Alas, 50 years later with the same north having been in power for close to 4 decades, Kano one of the better known state in the region now has to depend on free Islamic education from another country. Anyway, why islamic? Don't they have enough islamic schools in kano? Moreover, is islamic education what the people of kano really need to take care of their own affairs? What have all the myriad kano indigenes that have traversed our political terrain achieved for their people that now they still need FREE education from another country? And what is in it for the saudis? Afterall, noone gives you something for nothing. There is nothing altruism! Haven't we had enough religious radicalism to contend with without importing another form from the saudis?

Its a shame that nigeria with all her numerous natural and human resources is now nothing but a beggar nation, after been ruled for most of her independent life by the north. We are nothing but an aids nation. Everyone is giving us aids. more like a dumping ground for their rubbish but unfortunately, we still pay for it one way or the other.

Yet, the same NORTH still wants to hang on to power or else,

I will take the ELSE!

Religious violence and Islamic education are parallel to each other. The so called religious amajiris who butcher people are scarcely educated. I don't see anything wrong if University of Medina decides to build a satellite campus in Kano. It will improve the Nigerian economy and the lifestyles of the impoverished Northers in general.

I feel you but they were born to rule na and not to go to school.

That was the impression they were sold on by their useless elites. More like Born to ruin.

Ask yourself why Nnamdi Azikiwe was myopic enough to sign such contract with the North.

Zik wasn’t Myopic. He thought he could manoeuvre the sardunna later on forgetting that the sardunna himself does not trust Zik or any other progressive southerner, including Awo. In fact, the sardunna ended up playing the two against each other.

It shows that  even though he was a very noble and intelligent man but he never really understood the underlining factors controlling the Nigerian polity.
I don’t believe he misconstrues the northerners rather  he and awo underestimated the North’s fear of being dominated by the south plus the fact that the sardunna hasn’t forgotten his g/grand father’s aspiration to dip the Koran in the atlantic ocean.

How will holding on to power help them catch up with the south in terms of education and development?.

The idea was development in all ramifications will be stunted (in the south) whilst with the aid of affirmative policy, the north will catch up with his southern brother. Instructively, the sardunna with his feudalist mindset had no intention of educating his masses as they were ready tools to unleash on the south when the need arises. Instead, he packed them into the military whilst only their elites like the TBs, Katsinas, Muttalabs, Sanusis and co were able to send their kids to foreign schools for quality educations.

Awolowo wouldn't have agreed left for him alone instead make oyibo hold the power till further notice
You are definitely right on the mark there. No way would Awo a socialist even contemplate working with a feudalist let alone as a junior partner. However, Zik a “nationalist” did! It was said that the sardunna hated Awo for among so many things, for generating the necessity for him to go round his fiefdom to campaign whereupon he was covered in dust. Plus, Awo promised to introduce free education to the North! An abomination!!!

@ illusion2,

Thanks. Am under no illusions what is in stock for the citizens of Kano and the rest of us when the saudis out of the goodness of their heart dash us "free Islamic educations".
