[size=15pt] Science teachers get salary increment in Ekiti [/size]


The Ekiti State government has said that science teachers in its payroll will, henceforth, be paid 6.25 per cent of their basic salaries as monthly emolument in order "to re-awaken the teaching of science and technology in public secondary schools in the state."

The state governor, Mr Segun Oni, who made the declaration during this year's celebration of World Teachers' Day in Ado-Ekiti, expressed hope that the gesture would boost the morale of science teachers and increase the interest of pupils in science subjects.

He explained that his administration was making the welfare of teachers its priority, as it had paid all the gratuities and pension arrears owed teachers in the state from 1993 till date, noting that teachers' salaries, which were once the last to be paid every month, were now being paid promptly.

According to him, his administration would also commence the implementation of its Unified Public Service Scheme by the beginning of next year to allow teachers in the state have the opportunity of rising to the higher level in the civil service.

We seems to be TRYING to make the right steps. . . . but I feel that the school fees should have been decreased.
Paying the teachers high salaries is not going to help children who can't afford those high school fees. Makes no sense.

A reasonable nd inspiring step from the government.it's should be executed bit by bit ,Roma wasn't built in a day.the next step should on how to bring down d tuition fees so dat parents can fine it easy to fund their children fees.

@ Ileke-IdI, Thats great. My mum is from Awo-Ekiti. Have been there twice. Have been to Ado as well. Have got loads on cousins there.

While I appreciate the gesture of the governor, I would like to know what the annual basic salary of a science teacher is.

It is then that we can actually determine the impact of the gesture of the teachers!

Another empty pronouncement dubbed policy that will be difficult to implement . what of English & Math teachers? Don't they deserve a bump in salary? even Yoruba teachers.

Why not allocate the money as grants/bursaries for teachers training in Science/techology and invest in science and computer labs to increase student interest.

For a state who's motto is "Fountain of Knowledge" not much thought was put into this.

Salary increment is a right step but this one has wrong execution. . . If Science teachers will be earning more dan the other teachers wont their be problems ?

most of the ekiti teachers will start running after science courses, few and aggrieved teachers are left to take students who are not scientifically inclined

the salary scheme should be balanced IMO. . . but can encourage them science pple by building well equipped laboratories and providing other useful

materials for their researches
