When you're broke. What comes to your mind? What works best for you to get outta the valley?

I mean you're so broke that even if you got an appointment that will bring 500k you dont even have 800naira to fuel the car.

As an enterprenuer does it come to you to quit and start doing 9 to 5? If the tough time last more than 6months.

And in this discussion context - I'm talkin about ppl who have been earning good before. Average of 1.5m to whatever million annually.

Dont you think you'll go crazy if you remember the bills. House rent, office space, telephone, your secretary etc. Thank God tax is easier in Naija.

When it seems all your contacts failed you. Its taking longer to get an LPO from your major client.

Some of your friends sense you're broke and cant quickly loan you 100k like the good ol' days.

Can you imagine your phone rarely rings these days. Oh! Someone called to ask how far with that 20k you borrowed.

Your Pastor told you prayer changes things. Now you're so thin because of continual fasting. Or maybe you're thin because you've not been sleeping properly. As a proper African you may think you've been bewitched.

Your talent doesn't count again jaare.

You need to get back on your feet fast. Where do you go from here.

Dont hurt yourself that wont work.

What will work then!

I really suffered during a period of my life when I had lots of ideas in my head but no money to execute them, so I'm very conservative financially. The fear of getting broke slows me down, but it keeps me from getting broke. If I actually get broke again, I probably won't be able to bear it at all. It'll probably affect my health very badly. embarassed

@Teslim, i think i like to quote wise peps from time to time, i will share one with you my Brother, a wise man use to say "Picture yourself in the crowd, somuch activity and traffic around you, the best way toi get a bearing is to just out and view the crown from a good view, then you can navigate your way around." I think you should think about it and it just might work for you,

May the forces be with you,

If I were broke, I would try to figure out why? I mean I would see if my habits, or lack of good habits, were contributing to my being broke. I would evaluate my situation honestly, take a good look at my income verses my expenses. I would be see if I am living above my means with the salary I receive. I would evaluate my spending habits.

But most importantly, I would come up with solutions to make sure I am not broke again, or rarely broke--even if that means changing my lifestyle.

BROKE ! sad This is the most SCARY experience I detest in this life, If u've ever been BROKE, I mean reaaaally BROKE, u would understand, You can only plan and invest towards rainy days, and also pray to GOD to rebuke any step/move that'll lead u to this ordeal, because no matter how much you try or think u r SMART, 'EXCEPT THE LORD BUILDS D HOUSE D BUILDER BUILDS IN VAIN', Just ask for his wisdom to be prepared, because THAT STORMY PERIOD WILL ALWAYS COME . sad

Back to the Topic, I felt like running away, so terrified to face the world and all ! smiley, I don't ever want to experience it NOT EVER AGAIN! embarassed

Hey tEsLim,

What you've enumerated above comes to pass in a man's life from time to time (because life isn't supposed to be a bed of roses; even roses have thorns) and I know different people have different ways of getting out of their problem(s).

I'll share my own beliefe cos I have been there a few times. Like a couple of contributors said before me, you really need to evaluate yourself and circumstances to see what brought this predicament upon you in the first place, and seriously too, you need to be truthful to your self.

Then evaluate your position, once you know what went wrong, and plot a way out fast! Once you find out what steps to take to get you out of the mess, then take action.

And lastly but most importantly, PRAY! I have found myself in some situations that after doing all I can do, I prayed and God intervened in such a way that I never thought possible.

My conclusion:- After man has done what man can do; that is when God will do what only He can do (and man can't do).

Or to put it the other way round:- God will only do His own bit when you have done your own bit; don't expect or wait for Him to do your own part.

The Bible says (pls don't ask me the verses): , 'when' trouble comes, : not 'if' trouble comes, embarassed cheesy wink

The fear of becoming broke, should on the other hand, not become a handicap. The truth is that almost everybody who made a lot of money did not allow this fear to stop them. A major point is that they took calculated risks.

It is interesting to hear people believing that if something major does happen to them, that somebody else (in the village) is most likely responsible. I wonder how much people really believe this.

being broke is one situation am gradually pulling myself out of and jeeese, its like jail, just that this time it's legal to break out. sometimes it's even easier to be broke. But to be broke and in debt is even worse. Prayer comes in, some desperation comes in and the attraction of a 9 - 5 becomes more tempting. I think it all boils down to lifestyle which is not easy to break off especially when you're socially active. But the good thing's when the kishi comes, it just has to multiply, remembering the memory of where u are coming from. @ teslim thanks a great deal for posting this topic cos it's very real to some of us,

Good Question.

When I moved to Yankee, at the back of my mind was saving up money to pay rent, that is being very afraid of being homeless. After experiencing abundant miracles in my life, I now have confidence in my Creator that He wont disappoint me.

I definatley agree that GOD smiley is the one to be ALWAYS trusted in such situations. i think that it happens to everyone one way or another, but some people are more affected than others. Just work very hard, trust the Lord, check your life style, and look at those around you. Some people are very instrumental to the downfall of others.
Re: When You're Broke. What Comes To Your Mind? by Rlst84sale(m): 6:08pm On May 22, 2007
I think we are talking of a business man/woman broke. It's different with people who have 9-5 job at least they know that they will get paid weekly, biweekly, monthly or what have you.  I think what causes a business man/woman broke most of the times is the risks that we take. As business man/woman you always look at ways to inrease your money and many times it doesn't work that way. For me when I'm completely broke (which I have been many times), I sit down and evaluate to the smallest details where things went wrong, then I start applying the basic rules of business. Starting from prayers, working business principles they don't teach you in college, using every resource I have left on prospecting. Calling all past clients, word of mouth on the street, everywhere you go, your fisrt word is sale, second is sale, third is sale.  Anyone in business here in The US will tell you what the economy is doing now especially in real estates.

From that experience I learned that it is one of those steps with which God trains me to push me forward and get better. You should always document things that you do well and  otherwise so you can refer back to them when circumstances call for it.  We business men/women tend to take things for granted and relax when things are going great, thinking that it's always going to continue like that. I will advise you that once you pray you have to put serious work behind the prayer then you will definitely get results. Don't leave everything to miracles, miracles are occassional but principles always work. God bless.

Note: Have you structured your business in such a way that you can approach a bank for finances?. May be you should research that.
Re: When You're Broke. What Comes To Your Mind? by kachiface(m): 9:27pm On May 22, 2007
Hey I have been there. I have faced basically the whole thing you wrote about. Mine lasted for over 7months, and surely i started thinking of a 9 to 5. Only thing is that I couldn't get round to doiong it.

My business was yielding over 5M annual turnover, but it really went bad and I grew thin, not just from fasting, but cos i didn't have food! I had to let go of all my workers and men it was crazy as hell, It was as bad as not having money for fuel.

In Nigeria, structuring your business to get money from the bank is not a walk in the park. Nigerian banking is basically no banking. Who do you have in banks today? Animal scientists, engineers, zoologists, doctors - what do they understand about banking, determininng business success probability or what? I remember a bank I went for a facility once and they preferred a guy bringing in cement - their logic? He has x amount of bags, bringing at y naira and selling at z naira, profit is w, well i asked the officer processing my facility, is that banking? You went to the university for years to learn what the average hawker on the road knows? You dont need special skillset to know that 1200-1000 gives a profit of 200 per bag! But that is not bankin, no professionalism

Anyways, there is a principle i used: seed-time-harvest, when i was in the valley all i tried to to was excite myself that I was closer to the harvest than when i had so much to sow, and of course, it took time, but the harvest started coming in.

Patience is a "must-have" for every entrepreneur. You must be a die-hard to survive business, especially if its a professional service you're offering.
