As much as i respect Kukah,my dear Bishop i do not totally agree with him. Nobody is demonising Fulani,it is the herdsmen that are the problem. There are many Fulani business men in Oil and Gas,manufacturing, petty trading, transportation, burea de change and every other business in Nigeria and nobody complained about them. The cry is about herdsmen who took it upon themselves to bring havoc to their host instead of doing their normal business peacefully. We cannot be politically correct at the expense of our lives. If a bee stings you and you hear the buzz of a fly,you will flee. That is natural and no apologies to the herdsmen.

...the thing with Nigeria is we will be seeing 'black' but we will call it 'white' ...the intimidation by this sets of people in addition to the silence of PMB over the issue and helplessness of the people is bathing the hate speech...

we do not pray for war..but from the look of things it may just be at our door steps

The Yoruba started it right? I guess it was the Yorubas that were killing Benue people in their hundreds. It was the Yorubas that were killing Igbo people in Enugu and planting flags there. It was the Yorubas that has been killing the Plateau people.

Don't worry, keep on the deception. The day of Reckoning is at hand.

The day Fulani herdsmen will be dealt with and their heads sent home in sacks is coming.

Go to Plateau state and see the destruction and carnage they left behind. Go and see the dead people there and keep blaming the Yorubas.

I did my NYSC in Tunkus, Mikang LGA, Plateau state. The Fulani herdmen teamed up with Hausa fools to ransack the village. The youths of the village massacred them and shared their cows for meat. I guess that one too is Yoruba people's fault abi? Iranu.

There are 2 kinds of people i deal with:

Those who know but don't know they know

Those who don't know but know they don't know

Then there's your type, those who don't know and don't know they don't know. In other words, career ignoramuses. Unfortunately for you but fortunately for me, I don't feel any guilt about avoiding schooling fools.

So enjoy your blissful ignorance, safe in the cocoon of general unawareness. You're harmless this way.

Yesterday, Prof Pat Utomi spoke against the demonization and ethnic profiling of the Fulani people. Today, Bishop Mattew Kukah of the Catholic Church has done the same. I applaud their courage for refusing to flow with the herd.

I believe we still have so many reasonable Nigerians who are concerned about the ongoing politically motivated hate speech against a particular set of people. This is the time to speak up. We don’t want another 1966 pogrom or Rwandan kind of genocide in our country. This is the time to put our humanity above ethnic sentiments.

While we condemn criminality and ask for security agencies to step up their game and ensure safety of lives and properties, we must never fall in line with those ethnicizing crimes.
. I can swear with my life that this wouldn't have been your position if the people involved are igbos.

the best way forward is just to be value free in our analysis many of us know the truth but because of the religion, ethnic, language, tribe, location, state and so on differences in between do not allowed us to confronts the issue objectively.

The Catholic bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, has warned against blanket demonisation of herdsmen, especially of the Fulani stock, warning that such actions could be preamble to a breakout of violent confrontation against the Fulani.

The bishop said hate speech often precede any genocide experienced in history.

Mr Kukah spoke Tuesday at a colloquium on fake news and hate speech organised by the Olusegun Obasanjo Centre for African Studies, an arm of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

He said Nigerians “have to be very careful” before the situation degenerates beyond control.

He likened the uproar and profiling of the Fulani to what happened to the Igbo leading up to the Nigerian civil war between 1967 and 1970.

“If it is Fulani today, yesterday it was the Igbos,” he said.

Reacting to the recent controversy on the use of picture of a herdsman on the Nigerian passport booklet, Mr Kukah said he was almost swayed by the fake news, before he got a copy of the passport himself.

The cleric displayed his passport to illustrate the content and debunk the insinuations that it carried only a picture of a herdsman.

“When I look at my passport, it has the coat of arm and map of Nigeria. Then right in front of the data page where all my information is, I have the Bini. I am not a Bini man, but I am eminently proud of this. I didn’t even know it was here, because I had to go through the passport page by page.

“When I opened the passport the first thing I saw was Zuma Rock, then I see Tiv dancers. Who gave them permission to put Tiv dancers? Then I got to next page, before I came to this poor Fulani man who is standing with his cows.

Suddenly, this is the only thing we have chosen.

“Why is it exciting? It is exciting because this is the time for us to ‘hate’, literally tag every Fulani as a herdsman. We are on a very dangerous precipice,” he said.

Mr Kukah said it was time for those in the position of leadership to tame the situation.

“Those who lead us should better stand up and tell us where we are going,” he said.

The Catholic priest also urged Nigerians to be each other’s keeper and avoid ethno-religious profiling in dealing with each other.

To further tame the spread of hate, Mr Kukah called on media to sieve through in choosing who to give audience to avoid persons who propagate hate and mischief.

In his opening remarks, NOUN’s vice chancellor, Abdalla Adamu, said liberalisation of the media space by technology provided opportunity for easy spread of fake news and hate speech.

He lamented increase in hate speech in the polity which, he said, will not augur well for the society.

“What we see are labels over crimes. The moment you start talking about labels, you are breeding hate speech,” Mr Adamu said.

In her contribution, former journalist and politician, Chris Anyanwu, also bemoaned “too much of this hate and bile stuff” warning that it could consume the country if not properly tackled.

“We have to be careful not to use our own hands to set our own house on fire and someone will sit there in Russia laughing,” she said.

Ms Anyanwu, a former senator, said the media has a big role to play in reversing the trend, but lamented poor quality of journalism currently in the country.

She said the rise of “brown envelope” in journalism has bred poor attitude to work thus some reporters rely on press releases churned out by newsmakers.

Whatever happened thereafter is the harvest of Fulanis handy work that they are reaping. The person to be held responsible will definitely be Buhari for is actions and inactions. I think all mechanisms has to be in place hence forth to teach this dullard a lesson or two which he failed to learn while he was at school and at the military while getting promoted by quota system for his incompetence and ineptitude.

Some of you are plain stupid.. Is it proper to tag all Fulanis/Herders as killers because of the bad ones amongst them? If your answer is yes, then we should call every person from the Niger-Delta militants/cultists, every Igbo man a drug trafficker/armed robber/kidnapper/ritualist, every yoruba man a ritualist/skull miner/Internet fraudster.
Some of you have lost your sense of reasoning, why should you generalise and discriminate an entire ethnic group because of a few bad ones? It's just plain stupidity, do you think your tribe or ethnic group will be spared if start stereotyping every crime in Nigeria? Make una try get small sense na.
You have said it all. Hate is a terrible thing to abhor,it blinds your sense of reasoning and good judgement towards the person you hate. There have been bad eggs among Fulani herdsmen for years, they should be fished out and punish accordingly. But most of these online rants about Ruga are from particular sect of people.
2015 election loss gave them so much pain that they hate any Buhari,Apc,North,Fulani just name. Anyone who associates with Pmb is their enemy suddenly. Anyone whom they hate that decided to be antagonizing Pmb becomes their friend eg Obj.

This your reasoning is so myopic, the cattle rearing is not only in Nigeria, other countries manage themselves and they don't have problem. When you remove hate and tolerate others you will have peace.
Talking of killings, there are more death caused by cultists and kidnappers including fake drugs here in south south/south east, it has not carried this much condemnation.
If you are chasing the Fulani's out of your region, as the northern are asking them to come to the north, when they will as well ask your people to leave their region I hope you will not still complaining and be blaming Buhari

Remove hate and tolerate a man who invaded my lands and is grazing on my grass with his cows and trampling on my crops and defecating on my fresh water sources?

All they do is write big grammars criticising this government but they can never profer any solution. The government came up with the idea of Ranching and Ruga to curtail the movement of Herders as it would go a long way to curb the farmer/herder crisis but they shouted to the high heavens that it is a ploy to Fulanise the South.
They don't want possible solutions to these problems yet they can't profer any solution. These lots are pathetic and bitter people. When you ask them to suggest a solution they'd tell you that all Fulani Herders should go back to the North.I mean, how stupid can some of these people sound?
You want them to go back to their region and at the same time you want your brothers up North to continue doing their businesses there in the North. Bro, dis people no get sense. I tire for dem!
They pretend to like Obasanjo and FFK because they are against the present government just wait and see how they switch to hating and calling them unprintable names (OBJ and FFK)if they ever speak any good about this government.
The only thing some of these people are good at,is to spread hate.

Whether Kukah or anyone sympathetic to Fulani likes it or not, they will still be an endangered specie in (many) years to come.

This impunity is just but for a moment. For every bit that Fulani (whether foreigners or not) did, same weight will b measured on them, their generation unborn. History won't forget.

If, with all these impunities, the real Fulani (that will suffer it in the future) are not coming out to dubunk, dissociate themselves with these killings, RUGA or what a view, then they are sitting on a time bomb.

However, for the Yoruba or Southern Muslims sympathetic to these guys, don't worry, it will soon reach your side. We all know when Boko Haram started, bombing churches, the Muslims in the north were feeling fly, but we all know the scores now.

Karma is a bitch!

The unfortunate thing in all of this is that the set of people who want to plunge this country into chaos are foreigners and the man saddled with the responsibility of protecting the integrity and safety of all without prejudice appears to be unfazed cos of primordial consideration of filial ties. How long does anyone think the rest of the populace would sit and condone insensitive and unabated killings and decimation just for the sake of so called peace of the graveyard?

Fulani is an ethnic group like every other ethnic group. People talk as if all of them are involved in crime which is not true. The excesses of the herdsmen should be curtailed and the populace should know an average Fulani man is like an average Nigerian that is trying to survive, I don't know why they are mystified.I am for the criminals among the herdsmen be brought to justice and their activities stopped.....but why referring to these ones why do we generalize all of them?... That's a wrong stereotyping that might result to hate

Until this morning when news had it that the Miyetti Allah visited CAN on the matter - as if it’s a regions matter- not even Buhari had spoken about the antisocial conduct of the Fulani herdsmen. It is not stereotyping to have before now viewed the Fulani as murderous criminals. By the way, the CAN had better watch out for the taqqiya of Miyetti Allah attempting to give the matter a religious colouration in the bid to have SW with its large Muslim following taking instructions from the Sultan of Sokoto widely acknowledged as the Leader Of Muslims in Nigeria and himself a Fulani! This matter concerns the Fulani displacement of other ethnic nationalities from land belonging to those ethnic nationalities! The Fulani are working hard to change the narrative.
