U need to go study your marketing 101. Have you ever heard of  chain of distribution?  This is what happens when Nigeria is led by  idiots.

Last time he said that Nigeria did not  Mass communication students. I wonder waht  OBJ would say  about electricity that  is needed in order for manufacturing sector to thrive. Michelin is gone.

Re: Nigeria Needs Manufacturers, Not Traders, Says Obasanjo by adconline(m): 4:10am On May 13, 2007
your argument is skewed, because you are off of the opinion that Nigeria does not need traders but manufacturers. Who is going to sell their products?
Re: Nigeria Needs Manufacturers, Not Traders, Says Obasanjo by nosa101(f): 4:13am On May 13, 2007
Problem: We have traders, we don't have manufacturers
Solution: Get Manufacturers not Traders
Re: Nigeria Needs Manufacturers, Not Traders, Says Obasanjo by adconline(m): 4:17am On May 13, 2007
We dont have enough traders in Nigeria? Does Wal Mart manufacture anything? Dubai is just a free trade zone.Dont you know that manufacturing requires a strong infrastructural base? Why are manufacturing companies like Michelin closing?

Do not bring America or the UAE into the equation?

Idiot Funny man, He should build and run power plants, steel plants, inland sea ports e.t.c and stop talking his crap gospel. Nigeria needs both!

Calm down guys, let's not get too pendandic on the details of the text, OBJ is making a fair point.

We have way too many merchants in Nigeria, Dangote being one of them. OBJ is only stressing that everyone should do their bit in promoting manufacturing which reduces the run on our foreign reserves and promotes employment. Traders will always be needed, but manufacturing is the catalyst for economic growth.

Aliko Dangote has taken the initiative in the provision of industries and infrastrucre (electricity) and should be commended.
Re: Nigeria Needs Manufacturers, Not Traders, Says Obasanjo by syskay(m): 2:06pm On May 13, 2007
Yes, we need more manufacturers, but the cost of manufacturing goods in Nigeria is too high. Many manufacturers have relocated to neighboring countries and are doing far better there.

Some Nigerians that have listened to this kind of gospel in the past, have got their fingers burned. This kind of sermon should only be preached when the government has created the enabling environment for manufacturing to thrive. Not everybody has the kind of financial muscle that dangote can flex.
Re: Nigeria Needs Manufacturers, Not Traders, Says Obasanjo by fromuk(m): 3:26pm On May 13, 2007
tell OBJ(Yaradua) to provide enabling enviroment you will see manufacturers coming in, we will not beg them to come they will beg us to allow them in.

We need whatever people are willing to pay for. If the oil we are producing makes trading cheaper, so be it.

I think someone posted a web link where very few Nigerian companies (mostly financial sector) made it top African companies. No Nigeria manufacturing company made it. There is a weak infrastructural base in Nigeria. Even NNPC is still importing fuel because our refineries money conduits are not at full capacity. Even CBN is printing money overseas. INEC printed ballot materials in S/Africa. This tells you that our industrial output is very low.

How many Nigerians are powerful as Dangote to source for funds from NEXIM, IFC and foreign investors? MTN, CELTEL and Co and are using generating sets to power their switches and masks.
I would like know if there are fully owned Nigerian manufacturing/processing companies that are waxing stronger on stock exchange? Cost of production is very high in Nigeria, unless you want to engage in pure-water business. You have to carve a niche before you go into manufacturing. The Govt should do its work and Nigerians are willing to put their money where their mouth is. Nigerians are greatest risk takers ever. Imagine people spending millions on business ventures without any loan from banks or insurance coverage.

Thank you for realizing we need manufacturers

Nosa pls dont copy me. If you could read my mind, you better get a job at CIA. My post is indicative of the fact that there is not enough conducive atmosphere for big scale manufacturing like that of Dangote. By the way do you know Dangote's source of power?

Also a bag of cement is still going up.

Saying that we dont need traders is shear ignorance and rascality of thought. Maybe OBJ should have asked our banks how much they benefit from informal sector of the economy (buying and selling) Its the informal sector that sustains our economy. Our foreign reserves are in JP Chase Bank because our formal sector has low absorptive capacity. So, we need traders to get products to end users. Imagine what would happen to Coca cola if did not have good marketing outlets. This statement says we need manufacturers not traders. Where was OBJ born?
Re: Nigeria Needs Manufacturers, Not Traders, Says Obasanjo by nosa101(f): 5:39pm On May 13, 2007
The CIA does recruit quite a lot here.

BTW, your arguments actually supported the fact that we need manufacturers
Re: Nigeria Needs Manufacturers, Not Traders, Says Obasanjo by naijaway(m): 1:28am On May 14, 2007
This is the only time i'm totally supportive of obasanjo. This is so true that it needs something more than emphasis. Almost everything in Nigeria is being imported prompting a lot of foreigners from different countries and continent to say the same thing ie Nigerians are lazy, don't like to the hardwork involved but likes to be on the buyers end which causes unemployment and lack of respect in the global front.
We stand to gain more when we become innovative by manufacturing what suits us and those around us and even beyond. We right now have the trading skills and the only puzzle left out is the manufacturing one. I felt impressed listening to obasanjo emphasis and show the foundation he laid for this adventure but his real emphasis was based on individual and citizenry efforts to make this kind of dream come through.
No country can be built on spending alone.
Re: Nigeria Needs Manufacturers, Not Traders, Says Obasanjo by adconline(m): 6:17am On May 14, 2007
Naijaway,
I wonder where you get the clue that Nigerians are lazy because they are not manufacturing. I dont know if you have ever had a private business of any kind.
Re: Nigeria Needs Manufacturers, Not Traders, Says Obasanjo by naijaway(m): 11:56pm On May 14, 2007
is what all the white nations and other nations are saying directly or indirectly. I know that naijas 'r hardworking but we also tend to look out more for short term gains. Buying and selling without manufacturing strength has cost us a lot; A few of these are:
* Our lands
*Inflation on a terrible scale:- just imagine the price of a second hand honda like 99/00 is from 3million naira that price can buy a new one in a lot of foreign countries and be covered with warranty, All these food stuffs, our petroleum products, almost everything and i don't want to get into electronics cuz the prices are ridiculous, and arms importation etc
*Other countries are having at least one environment friendly city in a state but not naija or other west african nations. Is until those countries have it and perfect in it and apply it on a massive scale all from africa's resources that's when naija will get involved and if you say involved in production u might be right but the present trend leads me to state people'll be buying and selling. The fact is that most naijas find it time consuming manufacturing but they can wait for a four to six months order of goods from another continent or country.
The truth is dat we 'r capable and thats why as an individual am back in school and when am done i want any team i'm attached with to rival any big shot manufacturer like dangote and any company trying to compete in Africa regardless of ur country or continent.
Re: Nigeria Needs Manufacturers, Not Traders, Says Obasanjo by yankidelta(m): 6:05am On May 15, 2007
simply put obj has failed us in provision of energy that's y d likes of michelin packed up so u can imagine the fate of small scale manufacturers and for this n soo many other reasons ppl have resorted to trading to ensure survival!so who's obj talking to?
Re: Nigeria Needs Manufacturers, Not Traders, Says Obasanjo by egoldman(m): 6:50am On May 15, 2007
With the state of electricity , roads, security and other basic infrastructures that are needed for a manufacturing enviroment , i think the president is trying to shift the blames of his failure to someone else angry angry
