THE PRESIDENT WITH THE WANDERING DISEASE OF SOKUGO
By Olohy Ejembi

From time immemorial writers are prophets. Like the religious prophets, they speak in parables, and foretell the future of their people. When Cyprian Ikwensi wrote The Burning Grass two years after Independence, no one knew that he was predicting the future of Nigeria. Of course, the Nigeria's government, since its handover by the colonial masters, has been suffering from Sokugo.

However, today Buhari clearly represents Sunsaye who is inflicted with the wandering sickness called Sokugo. Recall that according PUNCH, in the first three years of Buhari's first tenure, he wandered outside Nigeria in 33 countries for about 404 days. He spent almost half of his first three years as a wanderer. Buhari has attended international events than all his contemporaries - he attended the United Nations General Assembly’s 70th, 71st, 72nd and 73rd sessions, making him to have visited the United States for a combined 41 days.

Once upon a time his inability to stay in one place made him to move the office of the President of Nigeria from its capital to Daura, with the excuse that rats invaded Aso Rock. Recently he moved the office to the UK.
In his first three years Buhari went to Cameroon, Gambia, Niger Republic, Mali, Qatar, Sudan, Ivory Coast, Togo, Republic of Benin, China, Ethiopia, Germany, Egypt, Kenya, India, Senegal, Jordan, Iran, South Africa, Chad, France, Turkey, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Malta, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Ghana, etc.

Only in May this year Buhari went to Saudi Arabia twice and still went there few months later. Between June and October he was in Burkina Faso, New York for the 74th UNGA, Japan, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and UK.

Who is the Ardo that inflicts our President with this powerful Sokugo? Is it Osinbajo who is been alleged that he wants the President dead? Is Aisha Buhari the Ligu in reality here? Which character in The Burning Grass does Abba Kyari represent? And of course, Nigeria itself is the Burning Grass - the country is literally burning terribly.

Nice analysis. I read the Burning Grass back then and truly enjoyed it. Can't really remember all the happenings in the book... However, one thing is sure - our President has the Sokugo affliction.
