Dear Nairalanders,
I value your advise and perspective please lend me your rational perspective over this.

I finish my NYSC in couples of years ago...after several disappointment and frustration from getting job that i couldn't get one.i decided to face real street hustle and set certificate aside and fortunately for me...the street smile at me i was able to gather 500k through hard hustle.

Now i feel like starting something up with the little am having with me.now I'm considering my one and only skill (BARBERING) that i obtained early after i finished my high school.

I can barber hair accurately to the maximum effect so i came up with a suggestion of setting up a barber shop.but at a weird corner side of my mind i feel insecure that this is not good enough for me.with this decision i want to know if i should probably invest the money with me on procuring the needful equipment and set up a barber shop for my self.

I value your advise here so i just want to know if this decision of mine is rational or irrational

Tell him your hustle! He has reasons for asking and I'm almost 99% certain that it's not near what you think.

Your certification isn't a big deal, some of us are using ours to sell buns since we discovered it's brains we need.

Your answer is in your question. Whatever you don't feel like doing, you don't have passion for, and what you don't have passion for, you won't succeed therein.
Quoting you ..."but at a weird corner side of my mind i feel insecure that this is not good enough for me." That's the RED light. Don't!!!

There are many things in life that looks good, but kills. Many goes into business with the intention to take the world by surprise, but they're the ones the world takes by surprise.

Get financial education to help you invest your money. Be careful, money has wings.

I think if you are as good in barbing as you claim, it is a good idea to open a barbing saloon.

You just need to (in fact, you have to) get some very important factors right.

1. location (very key)
2. location.

With a good location, a lot of things should go smoothly (by the leave of God)

With your 500k, you should be able to start up with your shop looking nice and attractive and some fee budget going into marketing (flyers, stickers, business card etc) to your neighborhood.

And finally, as you grow (even within 2-3 months) you get some students/learners that you groom, or even get an expert barber to help increase your earning.

Barbing salon can be lucrative if you get your location right, shop all nice, customer care sweet, and service excellent.

And I you feel like being over zealous, after maybe 6months, that you must have been known, you can even add a Mobile app for home service request (you share this app with your customers that cone to your shop ). That will position you as being innovative.

I understand 100% what you are passing through. you feel barbing is beneath you and you can dream and achieve better. Yes oo.. I will not advise my brother who is a graduate to become a barber. I would advice you fix your money in a bank and continue your hustle till it reaches 2m then you become a sub-distributor for an fmcg, Nigerian breweries or cocacola only. alternatively, you can go to abuja and look for sure link to get a job in a top agency e.g NIMASA or DPR. that 500k can get you something good but you need to be very careful and discerning. please think long term not short term.

Let's first hope that the current hustle isn't more "demeaning" considering that barbing is "beneath" him.
