Nigerian Navy Destroys Ancestral Homes In Ilashe by Ilashevanguard: 1:16am On Jan 06, 2020
The beautiful tourist beach destination of Ilashe has worn a mournful look this past week because of a seemingly illegal demolition exercise being conducted by the Nigerian Navy.

Age long residents of these strips of island have been asked to vacate from the land they have called home. The same place many were born and for some a retirement abode until when their life light dims.

The questions on the lips of many is, how do we start afresh?

I know this beach quite well, and I've been availed numerous pictures from the scene after the invasion but what I'm yet to get is the actual reasons for the demolition

I hear the Navy decided to demolish the entire stretch of island, although leaving the beach houses due to the activities of pipeline vandals.

I have seen some of the images too and get daily reports of activities there but my question is why allow many suffer for the sins of only a few?

The supposed vandals have been arrested according to reports but in my opinion, the destruction is totally uncalled for.

The locals harbor these vandals, they will never report any case of vandalism in their villages to the right authorities because they benefit from it. The government should do this to any settlement that allows such practice to happen under their nose

What the government did was really awful and heartrending tbvh... they went ahead with this action without proper notice... honestly, I've never been stark raving mad and devastated like this. how can you render people who are endemic to the community internally displaced just like that. it's really painful because my great grandparents n grandparents settled there.. my family and I usually go there to celebrate with our kinfolks during festive periods ever since I was a child and it's always been peaceful until the navy started raiding from time to time.. unfortunately, not everyone who owns a house there is involved in vandalism. our structures were built solely based on hard work, now the government has destroyed everything.. Demolition of innocent people properties isn't the way forward for goodness sake let alone a plausible reason for whatever they say it is. Justice must prevail for us because the government just can't wake up one day and decide to wreak havoc on its citizenry. it's never heard of.

If this had happened in the southeast or southsouth, most of these Yoruba guys would have been justifying it and supporting the Navy. Now, how does it feel to be at the receiving end of it?

I do not agree with you. I personally live here with my wife and 2 kids. We relocated here 2 years ago, though my relations have settled here for decades now. I work as a business development executive with GilGal Properties Limited in Victoria Island. Most of the other residents work as Mechanics, cruize boat captains and deckhands, others work in the beach houses along the coast. There are Police stations and navy checkpoints around and officers from these units usually come here to raid the Vandals which are usually not from here. The decision to deprive natives of their homes because of a few vandals who could be easily arrested if not for greediness the of the officers sent to safeguard the pipelines is simply wickedness on the part of the government. I work hard and trying to create a sustainable life for my wife and kids. The government should please ask his officers to do their work diligently in other to save the rest of us from the trauma of having to lose a home and start all over again taking into consideration the present condition of Nigeria.
