Travel Diary Of A Nigerian-American Nurse (2) (3) (4)

Travel Diary by annex1: 5:00am On Jan 09, 2020
This is a diary. Its not yet accomplished so follow me on my journey.

It's been a long time coming I decided to want to leave this country. Far back as I can remember completing secondary school, especially as some friends of mine left.
Dad always assuring me of schooling abroad provided I passed WAEC accordingly - this was my motivation and the objective was to ace WAEC. This became a joke when they made me sit for JAMB the following year although I aced them both (WAEC and Jamb) initially - I mean, you promised me abroad, why make me sit for jamb again?

Anyways, a little about me. Last born, only guy. Not overly intelligent in fact not intelligent at all but I do and get done what needs to be done. Not long after the second Jamb, got admission to a private university - did a four year course and so on and so forth. Oh Dad retired sometime during my 1st year but I give it to him, we never lacked anything - from care to material things, I mean we were not all that rich neither did we have it all smooth as a family but we were ok - we knew how to hold our own.

After the university and service. I still had an eye for continued studies abroad but funding was my problem. Looking for scholarships at the same time for a job was priority. Got a job in a IT security company - limited liabillty- quite small. Remuneration was also little. I barely saved. Worked there for 6 months and resigned. I mean I had learnt everything I needed to know in that time, got a few of my bosses clients as close friends then I got off, my employer knew little about personnel management and was always bitter about everything. However I still am grateful for the soft skill he gave me.

Started working by myself for a little over 4 months before I got another job in an FMCG. Pay was greater than the former but was still 5 digits.I was able to save a large chunk of it. After all I wasnt paying for accommodation as we had a house in Lagos. All this while still planning on how I'll go abroad for continued studies. But I knew the little I'll save from this would go no where in even buying a ticket talkless of tuition.
I kept on applying for jobs and decided to run a masters program in one of the southwestern federal universities.

Might I also add that I was never in any serious relationship. The only one i could consider serious ended around when I was at the IT security company. And i really liked her, but she was much older (not that it mattered) not that age has ever mattered to me. i was 23, young and stupid. I mean this lady was divine
.One of those kinds that deserve the whole world. Even long after we broke up, I'll drive to her office on her birthdays to drop gifts anonymously. But that's story for another day (sorry for digressing).

All this while i knew i could not end up in this country - marry, have children and continue the cycle once again. I did my second degree full time and used up a great of my savings - still had support from my parents and sisters. This time I am a couple years past my mid 20s. Still determined to leave the country.
I got offers to leave illegitimately and start hiding as they say it. However I declined.

Anyways, finished my program sometime around 2018. Got back home (family house) regrettably because i was too broke to get my own apartment. Kept wondering where I'll start from, no job, very little savings. It didnt take long before I moved out of the house because going back to live with your parents at this age is an extreme sport. I was determined and with little pressure I must add - no girlfriends, no responsibility.

I decided to put an application for the Australian skilled immigration. Spent over 170k for the prerequisites and got into the pool. Unfortunately, IT occupations are highly competitive so I ended up scampering about how to get more points - I already had maximum points for English and education. I was desperate. I even attempted meeting ladies who wanted to travel to see if we could "pair up" the responses and reactions? - that's story for another day sha.

Alright, sometime last year, I got a job in an IOC. Well the pay is good so you can imagine how rabidly I save. In fact i dont buy things i dont need. I dont buy things I cant carry the day I am boarding. Sometime last year I decided to try canada FSW even while my application is in Aus. So this diary is to follow up this process - Canada.

The thing is - I dont see emigration it as a route to escape pressure or think over there is going to be an easy ride. I and many other people in Nigeria are hardworking and resilient, the issue is while you'll spend minutes, days, month and years toiling here, little value is realised. Little value for work. So yes, I expect to go over there and start all over if need be, I am prepared to go over there and start from the bottom provided I am assured it's a level ground with equal opportunity and given value for work.

Additionally, I desire the most to start a family in a country where my kids can and will have that same equal opportunity. My dad had the chance to send us abroad but he thought the country would improve.I dont blame him but neither do I want to make that assumption hence mistake.
And please dont come here telling me about how people are making it in Nigeria. I understand this is true. However I relate with people who earn over 40 million yearly (bonuses included) they are not business men but employees aka salary earners and trust me i have seen a handful resigning for relocation. In fact it was one who convinced me to do the ECA for Canada.

Currently, awaiting my ECA assessment since october and studying IELTS. Sure to write it in February because the pool is becoming very competitive so time is of the essence. Updates to come.

Update.

An unfortunate event happened. My passport got defaced because water touched it (how water got to it is story for another day).

I had to go immigrations to apply for a new one. I still had 3 years in that passport so applying for a replacement based on expiry was difficult.

They made me pay 58k for everything. Plus an additional 7k for their inconveniences.

Consequently, I have gotten the new one. With all these stories of no booklet etcetera. Money indeed makes the world go round.

I have also booked the IELTS so writing soonest. It's difficult working and practicing for this things but achievable.

Wish me luck!

The Educational credential assessment was completed last week after a 5 month wait. I am yet to get the details of the hard copy delivery.

I am currently sitting waiting in turn for my IELTS speaking test and googling oyinbo things to add to my speeches. The LSW was fair, but you know the way you feel an exam went well but result will be giving another gist.
I travelled in yesterday because no centre where I am based so i had to get a hotel.
The test was computer delivered by the way.

I desire not to spend another night in this town. It's another Lagos.
Re: Travel Diary by annex1: 5:16pm On Feb 09, 2020
Dear diary,

To be honest, I dont think my listening was "ok". That's a major concern.

The speaking part also, the interviewer kept asking me things like; why do I think Nigerians dont like borrowing things?
My response was - who told you Nigerians dont like borrowing things?
I think I took that question quite personal because my friend has been owing me some money for a while now.

I am back to my base; I counted 24 police checkpoints enroute. Each collecting money. Well it's technically the same as south west except police in SW dont bother wasting commuters time - collect their money and pass. The ones here will make drivers park, ask them to leave the car and meet them behind to collect the toll.
And oh, it's no longer N50. Double that.

Let me just start looking for money to book another test.

I have not been able to update.

I rewrote ielts last week in that annoying state again.

I just received my result and I think I out did myself!

LRWS - 9, 8.5, 7.5, 8!

You know how I said 8 is the charm for listening? Well 9 feels even better.

I guess I should begin gathering my documents in readiness for ITA.

Bless God!

I am now submitted in the pool.

Waited a while for the Ielts TRF to be delivered to my home. The first one wasnt delivered as UPS said they couldn't locate my lagos address ( an address just behind their lagos head office).

The second one was delivered successfully anyways. Currently sitting in the pool with a comfortable point. Gathered most of my documents I wont lie, POF was not easy but well, it's currently sitting in the account. Got my work experience letters, well I had for my previous employers already so I just got one from my current employer. They were really helpful.

Work too has not been easy, a lot of lay offs happened last week. A LOT. coupled with the covid massacre. No draws have taken place for my stream so I still am waiting.

Thanks.
