The Constitution Roles Versus The Limitations Of The Office Of Vice President by Joyce95: 1:36pm On Feb 17, 2020
According to the Constitution, the executive functions of the Vice-President include: participation in all cabinet meetings and by statute, membership of the National Security Council, the National Defence Council, Federal Executive Council, and the Chairman of National Economic Council.

Although the vice president may take an active role in establishing policy in the executive branch by serving on such committees and councils, the relative power of the Nigerian vice president’s office depends upon the duties delegated by the President.

What are the things Vice-President Osinbajo cannot do in Buhari’s absence?

Appointments: With the Presidency operating as one, the Vice-President cannot make any appointments of any sort as the Act establishing most government agencies and departments state expressly that “the President shall appoint.” Even the Vice-President’s personal staffers are appointees of the President, but are only seconded to his office.

Fire appointees: It will be recalled that Osinbajo had fired the acting Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura, in August last year while Buhari was in London on vacation. Osinbajo was able to do so because he was acting President and could thus exercise the full powers of the President. But with Buhari’s refusal to hand over to him this time, Osinbajo cannot fire any appointee even if they’re found wanting. He will have to wait for his boss to return. Osinbajo also cannot reshuffle the cabinet or sack ministers.

Acting President Osinbajo signed the 2017 Appropriation Bill into law in 12 June, 2017 and the budget was born. Buhari, who had been on medical leave for over 40 days at the time, had earlier handed over power to his deputy to act in his stead. Now that the National Assembly had passed the budget, Nigerians would yet have to wait for Buhari to return the next week for the budget to be made into law.

In 2009, when Goodluck Jonathan was the Vice President he refused to swear in the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu. President Umaru Yar'Adua was on medical leave in Saudi Arabia. It was eventually the outgoing CJN, Justice Idris Kutigi, who inaugurated his successor.

Many people will be shouting Osinbajo should do this, Osinbajo should do that, without knowing the duties of the vice president. There is a limit to what he the Vp can do. Thanks for this informations .

We need to understand some basic facts that are just constitutionally based. The VP has never for once breached the constitution as far as his roles are concerned.

Is this an attempt to absolve the Aso Rock errand boy?
It is on record that Osibande led Buhari's Economic Team Management from 2015 till recently when he was replaced. What did Buhari's Economic Management team under his leadership achieve?
They plunged Nigeria into recession, increased our foreign debt astronomically and made Nigeria to become the poverty capital of the world.

In 2015, they packaged an about to die creature, paired him with a fake pastor, and because he is my kinsmam I voted for them not on the basis of meritocracy. (This is the summary of how Nigeria sank to an abysmal level that she finds herself today)
Now the captains have wrecked the ship, they want to polish, market and sell the 2nd captain who contributed to Nigeria's present mess to gullible Nigerians.
I am warning again!

Should the North in their magnanimity allow power to return to the South, the errand boy is not the best the Southerners can put forward to take a shot at the presidency.
He will be worse than the lifeless thing and Jonathan combined, because of the cabal controlling Nigeria.
Nigeria doesn't need another lame-duck president like Jonathan, Nigeria needs a Buhari with a will-to-power to rule without intractable nepotism, religious fanaticism, ethnic bigotry and mental bankruptcy.
Hate me or love me, I cannot be muzzled by a mere mortal.

Except for kids of today who are intellectually bereft, everyone knows a VP is just a spare tyre to be remembered when the vehicle has problems.

they are ignorant of his powers. The only time we had powerful deputies were the days of Idiagbon and Atiku.
