Good day nairalanders,
I know many of us have been shouting at the govt to lockdown Nigeria totally but then. I don't think that is possible unless the cases worsens like Italy.
Let's understand something, Nigeria is the capital of poverty. More than half of the population are living below the 1 dollar standard which means some even find it hard to have a three-square meal.
Which means they have to work day to day just to see something to eat, not to even expand their business or anything... That's how poor they are
The satchet water sellers that value ten naira, how do you expect them to do it, surely their landlords won't pity them because this is Nigeria
If there is a total Lockdown, Corona virus would be contained but then mass number of people would die of hunger.
There should be an alternative before the total. Lockdown and I don't think Nigeria is capable of that
My humble opinion.

You are right, Nigeria is totally incapable of it. The Nigerians will be the ones to suffer, i. e. The majority living below the $1 per day standard.
And I don't think our politicians (in and out of office) will be feeling nice enough to share rice(how many derica is the custom.)
May God save us in this near failed state.
This should be a wakeup call to all.

True. They blanketly copy other countries without adapting it to our particular situation.
This their cure will definitely be worse than the disease.

Here’s what I think personally:
Since it is established FACT that 98% are guaranteed to survive this virus (maybe 99.9% in Naija) and 80% are asymptomatic or never get that sick, it may not be a bad idea if we stopped all these closings, maintain moderate social isolation, continue washing our hands and wearing masks, isolate those who are discovered to have it or come in contact with those who have it, protect the elderly and the vulnerable, and treat those who are treatable like we do with other diseases. I mean, we never closed schools and churches for other diseases, no matter how infectious!

SINCE THE DEATH RATE IS SO LOW, we can go the herd immunity route - gradually as more and more people recover and therefore develop immunity to the virus, we’d eventually develop herd immunity, at which point the virus is defeated (see below).
