This man has no shame. No govt, whether Federal, Provincial or Municipal, hands out food in Canada. There are NGOS (non governmental organizations) that distribute donations generated through donations and govt subsidies, specifically to the bottom (estremely) poor members of the community. The clos3st to handing out food that the govts do is social assistance which again, is a small monthly stipend handed out to those who are poor. You have to be extremely poor or a refugee claimant unable to work to qualify. Able bodied people are ashamed to ask for handouts because it is dignifying to even mention that you are on welfare. No govt goes around distributing food. If anything, they tax you significantly in order to generate development funds. As he mentioned in the video, he called and possibly exaggerated his household and level of poverty. He also possibly lives in govt housing to qualify which explains why whoever dropped those junks, didnt bother to verify his id. Shame on him. He looks able bodied and proudly recieving free food. The most the govts are doing in the circumstances is to give subsidy to people who lost jobs due to COVID 19, up to $500 biweekly.

Yes, food banks are private. But the government also funds food banks through grants and other govt contributions, but the organization TYPICALLY has to apply. Due to the pandemic, food banks and shelters dont have to apply.

budaatum:

Governments do not provide food banks. It is individual citizens who donate to them so they have food to bank usually as a consequence of government policy that impoverishes people.

If we want food banks in Nigeria too, we just have to donate to them. It comes under love your neighbours as you love yourselves.

Food banks in Canada deliver, and some did before the pandemic. I managed a food bank and my rotary club is currently volunteering to do drop offs.

Exclusive101:
The problem is he clearly stated supplies " it was distributed at everybody doorstep" were is exact words which was a point blank n straight lie.

Even at that if you make request from food bank online is also a lie. Food bank do not supply food to home even in under this epidemic. You need to get food voucher that you must take to food bank branch before you can be provided with supplies because one those not live in Canada does not mean you are naive to happenings there.

All this I learnt from a relative and someone trying to rubbish Nigeria or it government can not convince me otherwise beside am not foolish to believe an govt in the world can drop supply at every citizen door step.

Finally, some sense in this thread.

Guestlander:

There's nowhere in this thread where I said food banks are run by the government. But as you can see from the links I provided, the government may sometimes support them in their operations.
The point is, the gentleman in the video got his food delivered to his doorstep. That was his own experience and I don't think anyone should call him a liar without any strong evidence to prove that he was in fact lying.

MrSly:

How can you fathom it. So you think it is right for government to forcefully stop people from doing their business without relief to cushion the effect of hunger.
You're a citizen of Nigeria, why not go and demand for relief from your government. That's what the Canadians, Americans, Europeans have done and are still doing. Only in Africa that citizens worship their leaders (whether political or religious) without any iota of reasoning, and what do you get but disaster we have today. So let's keep on licking their bum until one day they sell Nigeria and disappear.

You are so conditioned to be a SUFFER-HEAD! I really pity people like you guys
On one hand, you are crying bitterly that you are dying of hunger and you are not doing anything about it because your leaders tell you "We are trying our best". grin grin

Someone more exposed than you is showing you, so you can act, that your leaders have turned you to a slave, you are here transferring agression that should have been used on you rleaders, on that person!

ORIGINAL SUFFER-HEAD! - Fela Kuti

Sorry to disappoint you, I'm not a suffer head neither do the person you mentioned, the one receiving from Canadian govt more exposed than me. No need to say much on that.

To your other point, let me make it clearer; Canadians, Americans, Europeans, Australians have always asked questions and demand answers from their leaders and not worshipping them as we do in Africa. They pay tax and enforce laws, and they are reaping from it at this critical time. Where do I start about Nigeria?

For me, going to Canada and enjoying all the benefits of living there does not remove the fact of Nigeria being a mess of a country. You don't fix it by coming on social media to show me what you benefit from another country. Even the blind knows.

Show me what or how or where you have pushed for something positive to turn Nigeria around. Ask for restructuring, community policing, population control, dis-associate religion from govt, unicameral legislature, or something good to get Nigeria started, some of you will say NO.

But everything he posted in that video is not real food now. its poison. i see bologna which is like pig intestines then i see noodles which is chemicals and then i see white shell eggs which is inferior nonsense and then i see crisp which is saturated fat nonsense. ALL I SEE THERE IS POISON [s]WHICH IS WHY THEY GIVE IT TO THEM FOR FREE TO POISON THEM AND REDUCE THE POPULATION[/s]. WHERE IS THE REAL FOOD ? WHERE ARE THE YAMS AND PANLA AND PLANTAIN AND SUYA AND AGBADO AND COCONUT AND GARI AND SEMOLINA !!!!!!

Most of the food I could see was processed, shelf-stable "food", not very wholesome, but better than starvation. BUT, I saw carrots, peppers, eggs (egg shell colour is dictated by the breed of chicken that laid it--the colour of the shell has no bearing on the nutrition of the egg within), and these are good foods. But please realize, panla, plantain, suya, agbado, coconut, and gari are not commonly available across Canada, being quite exotic. Rather ask, where are the potatoes, cabbages, apples, turnips, and other long-keeping vegetables and fruits that deliver good nutrition? The food bank is simply a patch to help people get through a rough time, and depends on donations, which are at the discretion of the giver. The selection shown is still better than what a lot of people in Nigeria are subsisting on--ground nuts and garri, and indomie--and the gentleman in the clip is marvelling that it is possible to receive as much as he did receive, and that it should start happening in Nigeria. That is the main point as I see it. It is interesting to view all the different reactions to it.

See useless question. How did I know their race?
Did I tell you I'm blind? Or too stupid to tell a black man from white.?

Please keep your insults to yourself, I asked how large your sample area was did I not?
Your original posts was basically categorizing people based on their skin colour, and I wanted to know how many people of black, caucasian or Asian descent you sampled to come at such a conclusion and based upon your subsequent posts I can see it's a very small group of people.

You are not allowed to jump into conclusions when you barely sampled 0.00000001% of a particular race.

NB: You can also tell an individuals race by their full names to a very large extent

FYI. I wasnt carrying out a structured research so I dont understand where these your questions on sampling etc is coming from. My conclusions are based on simple observations and an understanding of the society I come from and have lived in for over 3 decades. Sometimes y'all want to needlessly sound intellectual even where it's not necessary. In a bid to sound intelligent you ended up looking petty and stupid ( no offence)

And when you donate to any form of charity in this part of the world, you can claim returns when you do your tax filing. Even tithes that you pay to the church, you can claim like 60% of it back from government as it is considered charity.

No where in Canada is under total lockdown as of today 7/4/2020.
You only have a sit at home order for people working in non-essential sector and off course the schools are closed now for 3 weeks.
Just to avoid the crowd that usually come to get food stipends from food banks, they the food banks took the initiative to deliver the free food to your home since they have your address and you are registered with them.
Mind you eligibility to get food from any food Bank in Canada is that:
1. You are poor
2. You are homeless
3. You are a refugee
4. You are jobless
5. You earn lower than what is termed living wage for your family size
And so on
There's no free lunch in Canada oooooo

Not all Nigerians wait for government to take responsibility. Some know that responsibility means they get to decide their own governing.

It's a Canadian effort by NGO's usually supported by government to provide food support especially for immigrants/and low income earners. I remember when i first arrived Canada in 2018, we did use the food bank sufficiently until we were able to stabilize.

I don't blame the man though coming from a dysfuntional country like ours, this is a huge milestone but then it isn't meant to be a constant as one is expected to strive hard to get past this level and in turn become a food donor instead of a recepient at some stage. For me, really it isn't a big deal right now but i can perfectly understand where the man is coming from.
