President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he is halting funding to the World Health Organization while a review is conducted.

The US funds $400 to 500 million to the WHO each year, said Trump, noting that China "contributes roughly $40 million."

"Had the WHO done its job to get medical experts into china to objectively assess the situation on the ground and to call out China's lack of transparency, the outbreak could have been contained at its source with very little death," Trump said.

Trump said Tuesday the WHO made a "dangerous and costly" decision to oppose travel restrictions from China.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reiterated the administration's dissatisfaction with the international organization amid the coronavirus pandemic in a series of interviews prior the President's announcement.

"The World Health Organization in its history has done some good work. Unfortunately, here it didn't hit the top of its game, and we need to make sure that we push through efforts to fundamentally change that or make a different decision that says we're going to do our part to make sure that these important world health obligations, things that frankly keep Americans safe too, actually function," Pompeo said in an interview with "Good Morning Orlando."
Just weeks earlier, Pompeo and the State Department had highlighted the US contribution to the global pandemic response, including its role as "the largest supporter of the World Health Organization since its creation in 1948."

Tuesday's announcement about the halting of funding comes days after a major US ally -- the United Kingdom -- announced an additional £65 million contribution to the WHO.

The move to freeze the funding is the latest in a series of administration actions against international multilateral organizations. Prior to the pandemic, the administration's fiscal year 2021 proposal laid out a $65 million cut to the World Health Organization -- a more than 50% decrease over FY20.

The Chinese have so far strategically avoided digging in on any confrontation with trump because they know life will go on even after trump. America was so involved in her old ways that they missed the rapid - though expected - rise in chinese influence.

The US's withdrawal from the 2016 Paris accord last year which it championed alongside china now means it has ceded leadership to China on global climate issues, which they gladly accepted. This means china can further deepen its ties with European nations which have traditionally dealt with China with much suspicion due to her bad record in human rights and democratic freedoms. Thanks to trump all that are now in the back burner.

Technologically the US had always lead way until recently when a fairly unknown chinese company started making waves. First Huawei became the second largest phone manufacturer in terms of market share overtaking Apple and just trailing behind Samsung. And with China leading US in the 5G battle America had once more ceded another vacuum for China to fill. currently Huawei is so embedded in 2 - 3 and 4G technologies across the globe (on which many 5G systems will be built) that it is practically impossible, at least in a cost effective way to ban Huawei anywhere in the world. And the American telecom giants don't have financial backing from government as their Chinese counterparts enjoy thus winning this race will be impossible.

On the halting/review of funding to the WHO by the trump administration, this will just be yet another strategic blunder the Americans will make creating another vacuum for the Chinese government with its deep pocket to fill.

Strategically Africa has no business siding with any of these two gladiators, in fact africa should reactivate the non alliance policy of the Soviet era, only focusing on strategic gains accruing to the continent from any of the two partnership.

Just like there the UN on security issues, WHO chairs the world health issues. He downplayed the virus cos WHO restricted the vital information. WHO made it look like it was just a kind of fever we were dealing with, they didn't even inform us that it was airborne until recently. Most Americans can see through Trump's bullshit.
There is a WHO contingency Fund set up to deal with problems like this.In the last 3 years the US has contributed exactly zero dollars ,that is since Trump came to power.


The WHO offered testing kits Trump rejected them insisting they would make them in the US that did not work wasting g time and costing lives.
