Profiteering In Nigeria: What Is Your Opinion? by McDoe(m): 12:15pm On Jun 07, 2007
The recent fuel scarcity has further exposed the wicked attitudes of most Nigerians especially service providers, traders amongst others. The have shown to us that being in business is mainly for profit making and have taken this to the extreme thereby making themselves profiteers.
Profiteering is a word of contempt. A profiteer is someone who makes profit out of the difficulties of his countrymen. He takes advantage of the needs of his fellow human beings and makes them pay higher prices for his goods and services thereby reaping gold harvest. This situation is often made worse in a country such as ours where there are no price control agencies.
Profiteering is considered unpatriotic and even inhuman. From a rational point of view, it brings about a general breakdown in the life of the people. Unlike a situation where government do control or stop profiteering, ours is more or less abetting this evil.
What do you think of this problem and why are fellow Nigerians are so greedy.
What is the responsibility of government in a system that is deeply involve in profiteering;
And the way forward? Please Nairaland users, SPEAK your mind.

Sharrap, Mr. Business illiterate.  The purpose of starting a business is to make profit.  If there's no profit, there'll be no business to complain about.  If you think you can do better, start your own petrol station for 'loss-eering'.

I don't think you understand the word profiteering. It is making money out of the pains of other people. Yea, nobody is against profit making, but when such profit turns wicked, it leaves much to be desired. You cannot rip-off people just because you want to remain in business. I think you better have a rethink if you are one of such people who are involved in this kind of inhuman act. Please remember "judgement day"

If there is fuel scarcity, it is natural for the price to be high. That way, only those that need it most will buy it.

In a free market, there is no absolute scarcity. Sometimes the price of garri goes up, sometimes it goes down, but it is always available to those who want it most badly and are willing to part with more of their money. That's the way it should be. When fuel is scarce, the price should go up, so that those that need it for more important things like business will buy it while those that need it for unimportant nonsense will stay home.

When I say "business" I am not talking about corporations. I'm talking about barbers, transporters, welders.

When the price of fuel is allowed go up, renewable alternatives like solar energy will become more attractive.
