Germany's parliament has passed a law banning so-called "gay conversion therapy" for young people nationwide.

The legislation is intended to stop groups offering the service - which claims to be able to change a person's sexual orientation - to under-18s.

Those breaking the new law can face up to a year in prison, or a €30,000 ($32,535; £26,268) fine.

Research suggests the controversial practice can lead to depression and increase the risk of suicide.

Under the law, passed on Thursday evening, minors will not be allowed to take part in medical interventions aimed at changing or suppressing their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Parents and legal guardians can also be punished for making their children take part through deception, coercion or threats.

Conversion therapy practices can include hypnosis and electric shocks. But experts say the word 'therapy' is misleading because there is no scientific basis for it.

German Health Minister Jens Spahn said a robust law was needed to protect it from court challenges, adding that most people who attended treatment were young people forced to do so by others.

"They should feel strengthened when the state, when society, when Parliament makes it clear: we do not want that in this country," said Mr Spahn, who is gay himself.

Mr Spahn, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) party, first announced plans to ban the practice last June, and a bill was drafted in November.

However critics argue the law does not go far enough. Germany's opposition Green Party has called for the age limit to be raised to 26 - the Left Party wants it to be 27.

Around 1,000 people are subjected to conversion therapy in Germany every year, according to the Magnus Hirschfeld Foundation, a Berlin-based human rights organisation.

The practice is outlawed in Switzerland and areas of Australia, Canada and the US.

First, if Covid-19 had any effect on birth rate, it would be too early to notice. It's science, not magic. Second, you realise we had gay people in the Bible or prehistoric Egypt, right? Who engineered those ones?

If you read about certain empires and how they fell, at the core of it is moral decadence. And gay practices and immoral sex played huge roles. That aside, the science about covid and the vaccines for the past two years have been very embarrassing, and the truth is already out in the open.

Let's stop this eagerness to pin bad things on gay people cause regardless of what you pin on them, you'd get it 10 folds in the straight community.

Well, I don't hate them, but I find the act disgusting. From your old post that I commented on, the gay thing not entirely cheap. It comes with depression, regrets and suicides. Considering all the monies and efforts put on this gay thing, if it was put into counselling, therapy, and many more care to make them straight, that would have been cheaper.

Yes, it comes with depression and an extremely high rate of suicide. You know why? Because of the stigmatization. Because you see them disgusting and unworthy of your friendship. Going for therapy is pretending like we don't know the depression comes from homophobia. Therapy doesn't change sexuality. Like I said earlier, the white man introduced homophobia to many of thier colonies. They have gone through multiple eras in thier hundreds of years of existence. They have used therapy. They have used electrocution. They have used corrective rape (raping gay people into being straight). All these brought more suffering, stigmatization, depression and suicide. Things evolved and they learned that being gay isn't necessarily acquired and that it doesn't need a cure just because they're the minority. Your talking points are just so familiar, and they don't sound original to me. Are they your own opinions? If the science changes, would you change? You may have not been taking notice, but covid and the vaccines science for the past two years shows that mainstream science could turn out being pseudoscience. What if what was a rare occurrence has been weaponised? Gay, though occurring in nature, has been weaponised or commercialised? Will the science admit it?

Like I said earlier, homosexuality predates modern day science. So let's leave that bit. My words sound familiar to you because you might have come across a few other open minded persons in the past and outlook is generally the same. What I'm saying is based on principles that do not just apply to the issue of homosexuality, but generally applies to all aspects of human relationships. Being emotionally intelligent enough not to use our own nature, culture or personal standards/preferences as a reference to establish the goodness of others, and also staying away from stereotypes will greatly affect how you view others and how you relate with them.
