To be African means to be an individual, but one that forms part of a whole. It means to celebrate our diversity in a way that promotes understanding and to focus on the challenges facing our continent.”

Africa Day is celebrated every year on the 25th of May. It is an opportunity to celebrate African diversity and successes, to highlight the cultural and economic potentials that exist on the continent. These celebrations acknowledge the progress that Africans have made while reflecting upon the common challenges we face in a global, regional and local context.

Africa Day is intended to celebrate and acknowledge the successes of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU now the AU) from its creation in May 25, 1963 in the fight against colonialism and apartheid, the organization called for the founding of an African Freedom Day, a day to mark the onward progress of the liberation movement, and to symbolise the determination of Africans to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation.

The first #AfricaDay was first held in 1963 in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, when 32 countries formed the Organisation of Africa Unity (OAU). In the more than half a decade since, 21 additional countries have joined the OAU, with South Africa the last country to join in 1994 after Apartheid ended.

Join us as we take you through our #UBAAfricaDay celebrations over the years.

In celebration of #AfricaDay , we are gearing up for the 2nd edition of #UBAConversations .
This year we will be discussing “Domestic Policies, Regional Development, and a Global Agenda: SDGs and African Development at Crossroads".
