A seven-man panel of the Supreme Court on Thursday, in Abuja, held that Mr. Peter Obi remains the lawful Governor of Anambra State.
The court, presided over by Justice Iyorgher Katsina-Alu, ruled that Obi’s four-year tenure ought to run from the day he took his oath of office(March 17, 2006), not May 29, 2003 when Dr. Chris Ngige, Obi’s opponent in the 2003 elections, had been sworn into office.

It further held that the Independent National Electoral Commission should not have gone ahead to conduct the April governorship election in Anambra State, when it was aware that Obi had already filed a case in court on whether his tenure had expired or not.

The court directed Mr. Andy Uba, the newly elected governor of the state, to vacate office with immediate effect.
