South Africa And The World Celebrate Mandela's DAY by abdullahi45: 2:33pm On Jul 18, 2020
Many South Africans and people around the world have come together, though virtually, to commemorate and celebrate a great hero who was very instrumental and active in the liberation and independence of South Africa in 1994.

On this day in 1918, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, affectectionately known as Madiba was born in Mvezo village, Eastern Cape, South Africa. His mother was Nonqaphi Nosekeni and his father was Nkosi Mphakanyiswa. His father died when he was only 12.

Mandela Day, observed on Mandela’s birthday, was created to honour his legacy by promoting community service around the world. It was first observed on July 18, 2009, and was sponsored primarily by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the 46664 initiative (the foundation’s HIV/AIDS global awareness and prevention campaign); later that year the United Nations declared that the day would be observed annually as Nelson Mandela International Day.

Although, some South Africans have controversies about him (https://twitter.com/i/status/1284395629465280513), many people around world respect and esteem Madiba for his passion for truth, justice, solidarity and equality.

On twitter, Prof. Patrick Lumumba wrote "The great Madiba demonstrated to the world that there is no future without forgiveness. As we remember him let us strive to eliminate conflict and poverty in Africa."

Let's know what you think about this man?

He said this before he left the prison in 1994, after almost 27 years incarceration

Because Mandela was not a racist and a white bigot, right?

I agree with you. He is so under-celebrated amongst South Africans. Go to black South African twitter to see...

He has a mixed legacy in SA today. Some feel he sold out and didn't transform the economy sufficiently by giving whites too many concessions.

Others like myself feel he helped avoid a catastrophe in the country. The leaders that preceded him dropped the ball - and didn't build on his legacy - especially Zuma. He played the racial and tribal cards to mask his own misgivings and corruption.

So Mandela's legacy somehow got entangled in that mess.

Absolutely! Zuma would have destroyed SA economy and politics had it been he wasn't impeached..

Yeah. What else will a self-entitled ingratitude person say. Yeah, he was worse than the apartheid presidents that killed hundreds of thousands of black South Africans especially Zulu... grin

Where do u get your stats of 100s of 1000s deaths? Please prove it.

For a black president who stole from his own people is even worse. No one expects whites to lookout for blacks, so Zuma's crimes are far worse. He modelled himself as the people's president and yet left their condition even worse than he found it.

Maybe that's the sort of thing u celebrate in Nigeria but not here in SA. That's why he got the boot. So if that's what u term a self entitled ingratitude attitude, I'll gladly wear it - thank u very much. U can keep your own corrupt and comatose leaders.

You are so daft that you don't even realize how much apartheid presidents took away from you compared to what you think Zuma stole.

Olodo!

well if one insinuates that Apartheid presidents were "better' than Zuma what are we to deduce from the statment made by Howzit

The fact that I compared him with apartheid era presidents, and not Mandela or Mbeki, shows I was comparing two evils. Sorry that point flew past you.

Just the same with your last statement where u direct me to the "appropriate" people. Aren't u the one who said apartheid era presidents killed 100s of 1000s of people? I asked u to provide the proof. I can't ask other people - u the one who made the claims in a ridiculous attempt to defend Zuma.
