I understand wordpress core

if it depends on what you need, if you want something that is unique built from scratch

I was interested in building a forum too and I did it along job listing, polls, blogs though it took a lot of time and everything u can think of has to be done from front end to backend to hosting to SEO by me, though not truly done yet really no platform is but I think it is ok use,

if u Don't code or u don't want to spend time or much money creating this software u should use WordPress with it's awesome plugins

the advantage to building from scratch is not that much and if you are not good enough it can be a disadvantage why reinvent the wheel,

for me the advantages are
I can add any feature anytime
my source code is mine

disadvantage
since it has not been commercialized or widely used there might be some bugs some where in the code
SEO
if it is different from what people use it might be difficult to get user why use something that is not familiar when there are other u are already familiar with

I kind of prefer the "I want to make money route" not necessarily because I want to make money (who doesn't �) but more because you can climb on the shoulders of giants. Existing solutions have been time-tested on the field and often have robust Quality Assurance processes via standardised testing.

Compare Software Engineering with say mechanical engineering. You can build a spark plug from scratch but why would you? Why not pick up a premanufactured one and focus more on the high level stuff?

Or would you rather build a Word processor from scratch instead of using say Libre Office?

pcguru1 has given the best advice . . if you have no time, pick up the ready-made one and move on . . .
I happen to be the 'custom-made' guy, as I like my solutions custom-built, from stuffs as simple as authentication to the
complex parts like, load balancing and concurrency in data ops.
For the hell of it, my in-app notifications are custom-made and do not rely on the so-called libraries e.g. Toast, Notistack etc;
and they work just as nice.

I can totally relate! You will be feeling like king Kong that you can do everything from Scratch. Until you meet stiff deadlines
