For a while now, I have been nursing the idea of sharing some of my experiences living in Thailand as a Nigerian but due to my current tight schedule haven't been able to. First, what comes to mind when people mention the country Thailand? (Probably stories of Nigerians imprisoned for various criminal acts) but I put to you this isn't always the case. There are Nigerians enjoying their stay and getting on well with life in this paradise.
If you are interested in reading about my experience, kindly like and follow. Thanks.

As much as I won't like to make this forum about visa requirements, I will like to let anyone looking into this country know you can get in with work, tourist and student (the easiest) visa.

Most visitors to the country will probably land in Bangkok (Thailand's capital) which is one of the top tourist city in the world. The country make a huge revenue on tourism alone.

As for me, I left for Thailand on a student visa. The process was as simple as just making sure you have a sponsor's letter (with a good statement of account), notarizing your documents, a letter of admission from the school you are applying to, police report, the biggest hurdle will probably be the NDLEA clearance (due to the bad reputation of some of our drug trafficking brethren). I was lucky enough to be accommodated by an agent until I confirmed my admission into the University and lived in the student dormitory.

Right off the bat, the first thing I noticed was how cheap the cost of living was, at the time 1 baht (Thailand's currency) was equal to 5 naira, now it's 1 baht equals around 12 naira. Living in the dormitory I spent less than 15000 naira monthly paying my rent and utilities included unlimited internet and water bills (note:due to the fall of the naira this amount has risen 2.5 times higher). Food in this country is probably the cheapest any where in the world, if you really manage yourself and cook your own food you will spend less than 15000 naira monthly on feeding. Now the big issue is of course the tuition fees, I did a very respectful course for less than 700000 naira a year and the good thing is you are allowed to spread out the payment within the one year period, just make sure you settle before you apply for your next visa (you get 1 year student visa to be renewed every year by your school and immigration).

Welcome sir, I'm not a really a picture person but over the years I have taken some pictures especially while on trips to the island of Koh Samui which I think has to be one of the most beautiful island in the world.

Yes, let's do that. Sometimes people fail because they fail to prepare adequately before leaving the shores of Nigeria. This is not my advertisement for Thailand, I won't advise anyone who isn't determined and at least able to support him or her self for a while to come here.

As for job opportunities, due to the language barrier and visa status, most Nigerians have limited opportunities. But that of course shouldn't be a turn off as many Nigerians are into their own business of shipping, buying and selling goods around the world, you can always find a good paying teaching job as long as you show you have the ability. I have also seen some doing menial jobs like washing plates in high scale restaurant to get by. Just make sure you stay away from any illegal stuff as I can assure you, it won't end well.

Nice thread.

What year did you go to Thailand?

How do the locals receive immigrants?

What are the universities one could possibly apply to?

I got here 2013
Actually my first experience interacting with the locals was on the very first day I got there when a young lady came up to me asking if I spoke Thai then proceeded to ask for a selfie.
Many are very open minded to black folks while some due to the negative stereotype of black people from western media are skeptical until they get to know you personally. Overall, I will tell you they are widely accepting people and you should try to learn about the culture so as to fit in better.
There are a few number of great universities you can apply to like Thammsat university, Bangkok university, Rangsit university, Assumption university etc. Just to mention a few. Just do your homework online researching the cost of the degree you will like to apply for, and you should be all good.
