I am looking to purchase a really good book that goes into some depth about Nigeria's history. Any ideas? So far my limited research has led me to two books -

'My Nigeria - Five Decades of Independence' by Peter Cunliff-Jones
and
'The History of Nigeria' by Toyin Falola

Anyone have any experience with these books? And any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I strongly recommend Colonialism and Violence in Nigeria by Toyin Falola. It covers the period of the conquest and colonization of Nigeria and mentions the resistance and protests that are often not touched upon. Unfortunately, it does leave some things out, and it is too general and not specific enough in some areas. Overall though, it's an extremely informative book.

The present colonization of nigeria by dubious nigerian politicians is far more dangerous, retrogressive and inhumane than the british ever did to nigerians.

We have a strong fight in our hands to topple them, more rigourous and dangerous fight than what our founding fathers fought against the british for indepence.

'Nigerian History and Culture' edited by Richard Olaniyan - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nigerian-History-Culture-Richard-Olaniyan/dp/0582644321/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299945621&sr=8-1 - was a book I first came across in '93 and one I readily recommend

Contributors include: Richard Olaniyan, Biodun Adediran, Nwanna Nzewunwa, I.A Akinjogbin, Toyin Falola, Akin Olunfemi, Ibrahim A Gambiri and others

Try a book by Macmillan Nigeria used in schools if you can, e.g History of Nigeria vol. 1 and 2.
