African Union Demands 'immediate' Halt To Libya Attacks by denitro(m): 7:58am On Mar 20, 2011
The African Union's panel on Libya Sunday called for an "immediate stop" to all attacks after the United States,
France and Britain launched military action against Moamer Kadhafi's forces.

It underscored the need for "necessary political reforms to eliminate the causes of the present crisis" but at the same time called for "restraint" from the international community to avoid "serious humanitarian consequences."
The panel also announced a meeting in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on March 25, along with representatives from the Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic Conference, the European Union and the United Nations to "put in place a mechanism for consultation and concerted action" to resolve the Libyan crisis.
The AU committee on Libya is composed of five African heads of state. But the Nouakchott meeting was only attended by the presidents of Mauritania, Mali and Congo. South Africa and Uganda were represented by ministers.

The declaration said its authors felt inspired by Kadhafi's "vision for a strong and united Africa."
"The AU as an organisation has benefited significantly from Kadhafi's wealth," said Fred Golooba Mutebi of the Institute of Social Research at Kampala's Makerere University.

Residents in the city of Benghaz were hours away from being
assaulted by Gaddafi's troop. If not for the intervention of the Allies forces
God knows what would have happened.
Imagine Gaddafi telling his own citizens that he will have no mercy.
And the AU sat there doing nothing,
Now they want to feel important.
I am tired of African leaders,

So what has the AU been doing since Madman Ghadaffi has been killing his own people, what have they been doing in Ivory coast? What is thier reason for not wanting NATO in there, if Not business as Usual.

I beg I support them fully.

Guy, go check ur history right. Europeans never brought slavery to Africa. Slavery had been before d Europeand exploited it. Mind u, slavery is still on-going in Africa but we all feel cool because there is no European to accuse.

The AU has been very vocal in the Ivory Coast issue.I'm surprised you are even insinuating that they did/are doing nothing. The tragedy of what is going on in Ivory Coast is due to the interference of the EU and UN in the elections. I am shocked at your statement. You are Igbo as am I. You should be aware that the same thing the the "international community" a.k.a. western powers are doing in Ivory Coast and Libya is the same thing they did to us during the civil war which caused millions of us to die. You should be ashamed of yourself. Were the "rebels" helped then by the west? Please open your eyes.

Why have they not intervened(through military) in Bahrain  and Saudi Arabia(oil interest i guess)? Somalia, Ivory coast et al are there but they havent done anything to solve it. Even though i never supported Gadaffi reign, UN, france and US intervention is malicious. You dont expect a leader to be looking at an organized rebels to take over his country. He has to fight and civilians maybe be affected. Just a day strike by the UN has cost 48 lives and 100 injured. The same UN that is saying they are protecting the populace.

If a radical white supremacist group reals its head in Britain and causes mayhem in the country, does their prime minister not have the right to quell these people, who are armed from head to toe? Or should the UN come in and stop the prime minister and his government for putting in the mechanism to disintegrate the rebellion against the government?

NOUAKCHOTT (AFP) – The African Union's panel on Libya Sunday called for an "immediate stop" to all attacks after the United States, France and Britain launched military action against Moamer Kadhafi's forces.

After a more than four-hour meeting in the Mauritanian capital, the body also asked Libyan authorities to ensure "humanitarian aid to those in need," as well as the "protection of foreigners, including African expatriates living in Libya."

The committee said it had been unable to get international permission to visit Tripoli on Sunday but did not elaborate
.

Libyan generosity and Moamer Kadhafi's role in the creation of the African Union could explain the continental cautious stand, experts said.

The AU was born in the 1999 Sirte Declaration, named after a summit hosted by Kadhafi in his hometown on the Libyan coast.

The declaration said its authors felt inspired by Kadhafi's "vision for a strong and united Africa."

"The AU as an organisation has benefited significantly from Kadhafi's wealth," said Fred Golooba Mutebi of the Institute of Social Research at Kampala's Makerere University.

The pan-African body has taken a firmer stance on three west African crises: most recently Ivory Coast and previously Guinea and Niger.

Handouts aside, Libya has invested billions of dollars in sub-Saharan Africa.

It has interests in more than two dozen African countries, while its petroleum refining and distribution unit Oil Libya has interests in at least as many.

The comparison you are attempting to bring up here has no correlation with the Libyan situation.

At the start of the Protest, a MAJORITY of the Libyan populace lend their voice, their sweat, and their blood. . .spending days and night on a standstill insiting their leader must relinquish power for a democratic system.

Then the bombing start. . .the tyrant bombed the people into submission, his mercenaries shot unarmed civilians, there were calls from both within Libya and outside of Libya for help, the African Union made no single statement!

The bombings continue, Gadaffi's supposed well trained army fought with poorly trained rebels who were initially unarmed protesters.  Gadaffi's army used advantage of co ordinated air raids and land strikes against these same people demanding for freedom, African Union was no where to be found.

Libyan diplomats all around the world resigned their positions in protest, top military officials deflected to the side of the rebels, they called on the Arab league and the International community to stop Gaddaffi's madness, where was African Union amidst all these?
Re: African Union Demands 'immediate' Halt To Libya Attacks by denitro(m): 9:42am On Mar 20, 2011
Wait what peaceful and diplomatic route?
Are those not the same conditions given by the UN and Allies?
Which Ghaddafi refused to comply with?

The panel also announced a meeting in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on March 25, along with representatives from the Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic Conference, the European Union and the United Nations to "put in place a mechanism for consultation and concerted action" to resolve the Libyan crisis.

They should have set up a Committee like the PDP government.
People are dying and they are talking of having a meeting with the Arab league, OIC, E.U, UN,
Why couldn't they have this meeting like a week before.
If Ghaddafi wouldn't listen to the UN, US and threatening Brimstone and fire on them
why would he listen to some bunch of jobless A.U leaders?

African Union members are just afraid that their corrupt regimes could be next.

From your first statement, I can tell that you do not know what you aree talking about, no offense. Contrary to what you said, the majority of the country was and is in support of Gaddafi. Benghazi is NOT the whole of Libya. It is an area in eastern Libya. Most of Libyans view the attack as another round of the war on islam  by christians within the mediterranean. You should read up on that historical rivalry. Also, have u seen an actual video of him "bombing" the civilians? Random civilians?

Lybian diplomats all around the world did not resign and the ones who did was because of pressure put on them by western countries which they were in. The African union has been in the mist of the situation but unfortunately for us, we Africans, we do not control the international media waves. News as such are simply suppressed.

Also the comparison that I made is completely relevant in all walks. After all security apparatuses are destroyed, by whom and how is the country to be governed unless it's by the people who destroyed the countries defense? Is that not colonization or imposition? Shine your eyes.

African union should put their money where there mouth is, they should raise a million people to fight for Gadaffai since the war would be on the ground with the no fly zone in place. The group with the most men and would surely win. If they cannot do this,  they should shut-up. Anyway most of those die hard dictators in Africa have over the years in their respective nation and states dispensed off,  over a million people in their nations directly and indirectly so an extra one million would be one million less mouth to feed.  undecided

What! can you hear yourself speak.
Gaddafi paid mercenaries and paid money into the accounts of loyalty in Libya to support him.
All others did it out of fear believing they had no choice.

Equal action bring equal opposite reaction.
You cannot go around bombing your own people.
