4 Reasons Why ASUU Should Continue Their Strike Until March 2021 by AJohnnasa(m): 6:20pm On Nov 28, 2020
For the past eight months, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have been in negotiations with the Federal Government of Nigeria to resolve issues which led to the ongoing strike embarked upon by the union.

The union had gone on strike in March 2020 due to the what it termed nonchalant attitude of the federal government towards education in Nigeria. They listed Unpaid Earned Academic Allowances, revitalisation of universities, and the much debated IPPIS payment platform as some of their reasons.

The meeting between ASUU and the Federal Government on Friday 27 November 2020 marked the SEVENTH TIME both parties met to try to resolve their issues. Although the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige declared the meeting "fruitful", here are reasons why ASUU should not call off their strike until March 2021.

1. Non-committalness of the Federal Government
Few days ago, the federal government presented an offer which they said was the best they could ever make, but fast forward to Friday 27 November, we hear in the news that the same federal government have increased the offer for Earned Allowances (EA) and funding for the revitalisation of public universities from N65 billion to N70 billion. What this suggests is that the federal government keeps dragging its feet on issues concerning ASUU and education in Nigeria. For this reason, ASUU should ensure full implementation of any agreement entered with the federal government before they call of the strike. And since the year is almost over, the union should allow at least three months into 2021 for the government to have ample time to source money and implement the offer.

Should ASUU call off the strike implementation of the offer, the union is bound to go on another strike in 2021.

2. UTAS vs IPPIS
Part of the reason why ASUU is currently on strike is the disparity with the federal government over a payment platform. Government had proposed Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), but ASUU disagrees on the basis that it threatens the autonomy of the university system. It rather prefers University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

Federal government have heard the proposal of ASUU on a payment platform but are yet to approve it, it however, proposes that members of ASUU who are yet to register on IPPIS be put on Government Integrated Financial and Management Information System (GIFMIS) in the meantime.

ASUU should insist on their choice of payment platform until it is approved, to avoid stories in the future.

You have good points especially on insecurity and prevention of another strike next year but students' mind are now rigidly made up. They can never reason along with you.
