As the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) exposed a teacher and a headmaster who took teaching to their bedrooms, impregnating several pupils, another sad event occurred last week, when a school principal impregnated an under-aged primary school pupil.

The principal, Mr Maxwel Njome, popularly known as “Mr.Chemical’’ was a teacher at Government Junior Secondary School, Njoboliyo in Yola-South local government area before he was promoted to the rank of principal and posted to Farang Government Junior Secondary School in Fufore Local Government Area.

The 15-year-old girl (name withheld) whom the principal was alleged to have seduced and impregnated was in Njoboli primary school the former school he was teaching before he was posted to Farang Junior Secondary School.

Sunday Trust gathered that the principal was said to have been in contact with the girl in Njoboli and lured her to follow him to Farang without the consent of her parents.

The under-aged pupil had since given birth to a baby boy, while Mr Maxwel Njome was dragged to court. What appeared to be confusing some of their parents was how and why the girl’s stay with her principal was not reported to the education officials by her parents.

“The girl usually visits the teacher in full view of other pupils and the relationship was seem as normal,” said sources within the school.

In a similar development, the other accused school head- teacher was brought before some elders of the area after he was spotted with the under-aged pupil in his house. The girl allegedly revealed the relationship after she was beaten up by her parents following the allegations.

It was gathered that the teacher also confessed to his ‘wrong doings’ but the issue remained the school’s top secret.

Sources further revealed that a parents’ meeting was once called where the scandal was exposed. It was reported that the concerned principal attempted to resolve the issue amicably.

“He only brought back the girl with one bag of corn and few naira notes to bribe and insult us,’’ said one of the relatives.

“We want the matter to be resolved in court so that these teachers are punished. It has now become clear that our children are not safe,” said one of the parents.

The girl, 15, had earlier told her parents that she was seduced by the teacher, who once slept beside her, on a lonely night, when she was in her weakest moments.

According to her, Mr Chemical was threatening her with beating and starvation whenever she refused his sexual advances or threatened to spill the bean. The affair had been on for months.

Looking very frail and sick, the daughter of a local farmer who cannot be named, explained that violation of her right, started months ago, when the teacher ordered her to start fanning him. She fell asleep in the process and woke up to find that she had been sexually abused.

She told her parents that, “I woke up and felt very weak. It was the principal who deflowered me. Nobody had ever slept with me except him. I can’t count the number of times he had had sex with me. He said that if I told anybody, he would deal with me.”

But the parents will not let the matter go like that…

When the case came-up for mentioning, at the Fufore Upper Area Court the accused person pleaded guilty for impregnating the under aged girl who gave birth for him, but denied forcing and preventing her continuing her education.

Counsel to the accused person Barr. P. Elisha had applied for bail while counsel to the complainant A. A. Jatau had asked the court to refuse the bail application, but after heated augments from both parties the presiding judge, Chief, Magistrate Husseini Musa Garba granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with a surety in the same amount and adjourned the case to March 30,for hearing.

School sex scandals on the increase

The Njome Chemical’s case, has again opened a can of worms on other allegedly ‘known’ sex scandals between teachers and pupils in the state, as only recently the state executive chairman of the Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB), Dr Salihu Bakari Girei, exposed a teacher and a headmaster who took teaching to their bedrooms and impregnating several pupils.

Dr Salihu Bakari, who lamented the ugly incident, maintained that if the teachers are found guilty, they will be made to face the 1964 Education law which criminalizes this kind of act and provides that any teacher found wanting can no longer be trusted with pupils and therefore, cannot continue with his profession in addition to appropriate punitive measures.

Bakari, however, promised to punish those involved, and prosecute all cases of sexual harassments of pupils by teachers in schools across the state. He admitted that there are over 90 per cent of such unreported cases, adding that most of the pupils go through the trauma without the relevant agencies ever knowing.
