While surgery is an effective treatment for hip dysplasia, the cost is a significant concern for many dog owners. However, hip dysplasia surgery cost varies, depending on the type of surgery needed and the severity of the condition.

As a dog owner, it is not your call to make as to whether your dog requires surgery or not. Vet doctors are to recommend which is the best treatment for your dog. Many factors are also considered before a vet determines the best surgical option for your pet. You can spend as low as $1,000 and as high as $14,000 as hip dysplasia surgery costs.

The three surgical options for hip dysplasia are;

• Double or triple pelvic osteotomy (DPO/TPO)
• Femoral head osteotomy (FHO)
• Total Hip Replacement (THR)

Hip Dysplasia Surgery Cost

Hip dysplasia surgery cost depends on the surgical option done on your pet. The surgery options have their differences, and their use are determined by the following criteria;

• Age of the dog
• The dog’s health and severity of hip dysplasia
• Surgical procedure
• The size of the dog and sometimes its breed
• The budget of a dog owner
• Choice of the clinic (whether private or public clinic).

• DPO/TPO

This surgical procedure is done on dogs suffering from hip dysplasia and is not more than 10 months old. This procedure entails cutting of pelvic bone and rotating the segments of a hip joint, to improve the ball and socket joint. Depending on your clinic choice, DPO/TPO can cost about $1,200 for one hip and up to $3,000 for both hips.

• FHO

Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) is a surgical procedure that entails the removal of the ball of the hip joint of a dog. This procedure relieves a dog of pains and discomfort but does not result in normal hip function. FHO can cost between $1,000 to $2,500, including pre-surgery and post-surgery care, as well as medications. This method is suitable for young and adult dogs.

• THR

This surgical option is one that scares a lot of dog owners concerning its cost. It is the most expensive of the three hip dysplasia costs people can incur. As the name implies, total hip replacement (THR) entails complete removal of a dog's entire hip joint and replacing it with a plastic or metal option. It is the most effective option and eliminates discomfort related to hip dysplasia. THR costs between $7,000 to $14,000 for both hips, depending on the size of the dog and other factors.

It is important to know that your pet will not start walking; running or jumping around immediately after hip dysplasia surgery is done. It might take weeks before it fully recovers.
