Bank Fraud With Only OTP, How? Please Advice Her by Nobody: 1:56pm On Mar 03, 2021
A girl recently shared her painful experience with me on bank fraud. Due to security reasons, she decided not to have an ATM card, mobile transfer app (for Android) or ordinary transfers done with Nokia touch.

One evening, she was tricked into revealing an OTP code sent to her by her bank.

The next minute, a debit of #20,000 was made in her account. She later received a mail of online purchase. She narrated all these to me but I couldn't explain why because I thought fraudulent act can only be possible with an account that has ATM card or mobile transfer.

Please gurus, how possible is it? Someone should please explain.

Lastly, what do you advice her to do? She is confused, should she close the account?

Just go to the bank and complain. But that your "friend" must be a Dundee to have been tricked into revealing her otp.
There are several ways you can make payment online with only acct number. Like the pics below, I can make payment without my bank card

Your message seems not to be complete.

Otp- one time password

Otp - is sent to customer when a transaction is initiated, the otp is used to finalise the transaction.

Where is transaction initiated from?

Who did she show the otp?

Mind you, otp expires in ten minutes time.

That you are an internet literate doesn't mean others are. Do you realize that inspite of the campaign against internet fraud, many Nigerians still fall?. Are you aware that many Nigerians have no access to the internet especially in the rural areas?. Are you also aware some Nigerians still find it difficult to use mobile apps?. These are what fraudsters capitalize on to commit fraud.

I helped her block the account and she has gone to the bank (zenith), they couldn't explain how it happened. They kept blaming her for having revealed her ATM number and subsequently the OTP. But she told them she has no ATM. Heretofore, she hasn't unblocked the account because she is afraid that there could be another attack because there is a likelihood that they can generate subsequent OTPs from the previous one she gave them.

From that zenith bank transaction you posted, is like you have an in-depth knowledge on this please explain further so that I can relay the information to her. Thanks so much for your contribution.

You are right. I was wrong to refer to her as Dundee. Fraud is the ugly reality in Nigeria.

The person obviously used the account to make an online payment. The only organisation I can see with such acronym collects royalties for artistes.
The only thing now is to go to the bank and request they tell you who received the money. It is not going to be a tea party affairs because bank can only show you the payment but you may need to write the people that received the money for a possible reversal. Just give it a try.

Sorry for late reply.
