So we are done with the traditional HTML, CSS, JavaScript bla bla so what next.
I think this is the hardest stage in the web dev field, I might be wrong though.

I have spent some months learning frontend web development and after completing some pet projects I felt it was time to earn some cash while I still upgrade my skills. But reality swept me off my feet when I dived into some job sites, the requirements for junior web developers was astounding, it seemed I've spent the past months learning just 10% of what is needed for the field.

First I got bounced from upwork(twice) it seems to even register on that platform ma na another programming language, obviously my niche seem saturated coupled with my apparent lack of experience .
Secondly I observed there's more backend and fullstack jobs than frontend jobs and the listings for junior developers are really scarce and few in between .

After feeling frustrated I had to abandon my job search and try adding to my skill set by learning react.
There seems to be so much to learn ranging from automation, APIs, even git cos most job listings requires version control as an important skill. I'm beginning to feel overwhelmed and wondering if I can be able to pull this off.

Please seniors how were you able to land your first job? I stay in a local place and the small business around can barely afford to pay light bills talk more of paying for a website, I'm also not that socially connected. How do I get the all so important experience needed for this field?

After react I plan on moving to php, then laravel before niching down to WordPress development but before then I need to earn to get new courses and pay bills because I know I might spend the rest of the year mastering those skills. Na person wey chop bellefull dey code. My learning has taken a hit because I can't even afford data to access the internet for a while now.

I know I'm not the only one in this situation, seniors please guide us......make una cut soap for us abeg.

How could you go on searching for a job with just HTML, CSS and JavaScript. You have to know at least one JavaScript framework preferably react as it has the most jobs out there these days. Version control is a must especially when working in a team. Branching your changes, merging them, pushing them, pulling other people's changes. That's why you put your projects on GitHub when developing and start using git from day one so you know the commands. You mostly need git pull and got push. The rest can be googled on the job.

As for learning laravel before learning WordPress, laravel has a very steep learning curve to it and there's always new features added like everyday. You might be learjing something in laravel today and when coming to practice you might find out what you lesrnt is a bit outdated.

As a junior developer, platforms is what you need in your tool belt especially after you have learnt html, CSS, JavaScript and React. These platforms handle the complexity of your backend for you so you are just writing frontend code or integrating or extending backend code. You aren't building a backend from scratch. If you are yet to learn a JavaScript framework, do so immediately preferably react and then move to WordPress. Most of the jobs on Upwork are WordPress or other platform jobs like Shopify and Magento. There's also jobs available strictly in these platforms and they combine all you have learnt before.

You can see from the jobs listed that react alone on freelance sites doesnt have much jobs like that plus it's mixed with react native most times. WordPress has over 20000 jobs. Shopify has over 8000.

You will still use your react knowledge when working with WordPress but learning it alone and looking for work no dey easy like that. It's why I have been shouting here platforms platforms platforms especially for beginners.

After learning all these CMS, how long does it take you to start applying and getting jobs?

Honestly that depends on your job hunting skills, the portfolios you have et al. I got my first WordPress role the week I started learning PHP but I am a ferocious job hunter.

I thought php is needed for WordPress?

Yes its needed but once you know Javascript well you can learn the fundamentals of PHP in a week. Wordpress has its own specific PHP functions, hooks, shortcodes and filters so once you can declare variables, for loops et al just learn WordPress you will learn more PHP there.

You are right. The best place to learn WordPress is the WordPress codex at wordpress.org. Most of the courses out there are garbage.

You know Javascript, your next destination should be ReactJs and that's because it has jobs, a lot of jobs!

Don't think of doing Laravel before WordPress, because you won't get to WordPress and Laravel will get you hooked.

Someone once said Laravel documentation is about 700 pages. It has a major change every year. Besides, if you learn Laravel before WordPress you'd hate WordPress.

So follow the money, learn React and WordPress.

Forget about not meeting up with a job's requirement, just apply anyway. Worst that could happen is you won't get the job. I also believe rejection is a major job hunting experience. grin

It is tough everywhere else but lack of the needed tool and power makes it harder. Do you need an mps? Mobile Power solution for laptop, led tv and decoder, light bulb, fan, Phones e.t.c fully assembled by Nigerian for Nigeria for the last five years and still waxing stronger. Guaranteed to power your laptop for between ten to twenty four hours.

grin I learnt c++/c for embedded programming but getting embedded programming job would be very difficult because of its scarcity and besides I was still building myself and need to focus on the coding part which was not healthy for my course "Physics" and my lecturers are sadist.

I jump to web and learnt alot including angular/react but spend more time on angular.

I'm doing some personal project on php , and I've not done any considerable project on any language to consider myself qualify despite knowing I'm able to configure server and do all sort.

I'll use my IT period to do that. The things you'll need to learn are far deeper than you thought , good luck

Oga why not switch to data science instead. I know the kind of jobs I have gotten which I couldn't take due to my location and other stuff. I started as a web developer but later switched to data analysis.

Most companies need full stack developers
Just develop projects and pitch companies for an intern position. Showcase your projects on GitHub and share the links with them.

Coders are really scarce because coding is pretty difficult. Just like digital marketing and copywriting, if you are good at programming, you won't even have any business with Nigerian companies.

My advice is always to build something easier to prove to a client. I create a Github of every idea i have and work on it and also learn how to put yourself out there. It is not easy at first but all the best.

@tensazangetsu20 @karleb

Let's do a weekly meeting I feel this will help out. I get busy but I want to make time for this.
Re: The Travails Of Junior Developers by Lalami3232(m): 12:47pm On Apr 22, 2021
My guy, you're not yet a junior developer atall. You're still an Intern in the field. I used 3yrs in learning Java and that really helped me alot cus with that idea of OOP, i was able to learn Python in 3 weeks. My advice for you is go for Django and React, then thank me later.
