Super Friendly: Cameroon Versus Nigeria in Austria on June 4

The recently announced upcoming international friendly between the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and the Nigerian senior men’s team, the Super Eagles have been described by Cameroonian football observers and managers as one of the most vital and possibly most exciting fixture in African football in recent time.

Football pundits and coaches salute the timing of the clash as well as the choice of opponents chosen by the two football federations—citing prospects of good outcomes for the both nations.

The friendly scheduled for June this year, has been described as a veritable ground for the two African football powerhouses to prepare for forthcoming crucial games at the international level including the qualifiers to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to take place in Cameroon next year.

“Cameroon versus Nigeria game is a very good initiative for two main reasons. Firstly, it will give both teams the opportunity to prepare for qualifiers to the 2022 World Cup following the postponement of the games scheduled for next month due to Covid-19 and after a prolonged European and African football season caused by the health pandemic. It will give coaches the chance to meet their players and try as much as possible to re-strategize.” Says Raymond ELUME, Cameroonian sports analyst in an exclusive with this site.

The seasoned sports pundit further opines that “The second reason is that it gives the tacticians of the two outfits openings to evaluate their players due to the imbalance created in the football calendar after the prolongation of leagues in Europe. It will involve accessing players who had tough seasons and the amount of playing times they had at the level of their clubs this term.”

While Raymond focused on the importance of preparing for the upcoming Qatar 2022 football festival, football tactician, Martin Nkabyo, Head Coach of Cameroon league one outfit, Yong Sports Academy of Bamenda opines the June 4 match will be an all-important chance for Coach Gernot Rohr of Nigeria and Antonio Conceicao of Cameroon to build team spirit within their squad for crucial games. This, by summoning players who fit into their project and vision.”

Martin Nkabyo also believes the Nigeria-Cameroon clash will be a game much more than just a friendly for the “Old-time-enemies”.

“It’s going to be a crucial game for Nigeria following their qualification for the AFCON 2021 competition in Cameroon next year. They are one of the biggest contenders as a football powerhouse on the African continent. I think it’s going to be an interesting and tensed game.” Martin Nkabyo told Kick442.Com.

”They is never a friendly between Nigeria and Cameroon due to the old rivalry status they share in their quest for superiority. Both teams will face the game hoping to win to maintain their national pride.”

Cameroon and Nigeria will face each other on June 4 this year in a much acclaimed international friendly. The two teams are expected to use the FIFA international window for test games following the postponing of the first days of African zonal qualifiers to the 2022 FIFA World Cup from June to September this year which deprived the neighboring nations the chance to get international football during the FIFA break.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and Nigeria share one of the fiercest international rivalries in the world with 23 head-to-head meetings. Matches which has seen the Super Eagles triumphed in 14 occasions, losing just four of the games—This, including at least two Africa Cup of Nations finals to the Indomitable Lions.

Contrasting squad states.

Nigeria currently harbors one of the finest goal scoring forwards in Europe. Four of its strikers, Paul Onuachou, Simy Nwankwo, Kelechi Iheanacho and Victor Osimhen presently count a joint goal tally of over 78 goals this season with Genk’s Onuachu and Nwankwo of Crotone in Belgium and Italy leading with 34 and 19 goals respectively.

Resurgent Leicester City man, Kelechi Iheanacho and injury tormented Napoli giant, Osimhen have each spanked in 15 and 10 goals each— Glaring figures showing the lighting level of the team’s much awaited clash with the five time African champions that have in the months passed, fallen short of goal scoring glory—Lead forwards, Captain Choupou-Moting, Vincent Aboubakar, Moumi Ngamaleu, Clinton Njie and Stephane Bahoken are all struggling for form.

A weakness, Cameroon could however compensate with its vibrant midfield and defensive set-up managed by the likes of Frank Zambo Anguissa and Jean Charles Castellato–capable enough to produce yet another fireworks when Cameroon and the 3 time African kings, Nigeria clash as experienced in a 5-goal-thriller on June 2019 during round 16 of the 2019 AFCON in Egypt as both prepare for a much more appetizing 2021 AFCON showpiece in Cameroon next year and a nerve breaking World Cup qualifiers.

Easy meat for our boys. The only problem Super Eagles will encounter before the match is selection problem. So many of our strikers are in the form of their life, so who will start upfront?

Kelechi Iheanacho Premiership (14 league goals) ,Victor Osimhen Italian league (10 goals), Paul Onuachu Belgium league (29 league goals), Simy Nwankwo Italian league (19 league goals ).
