Causes of Skin Cancer: Both forms of skin cancer occur primarily when the mutations develop in the DNA of the skin cells. Due to the mutations, the skin cells often grow uncontrollably and form a mass of cancer cells.

Ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun or tanning beds often cause basal cell skin. UV rays damage the DNA of the skin cells, thereby causing unusual cell growth. The other form of skin cancer, the squamous cell, also develops due to long-term exposure to cancer-causing chemicals. It can develop within ulcer, scar, or some kinds of human papillomavirus (HPV).
