Uber And Others Loses Case In Court by reality1010: 2:58pm On Sep 15, 2021
Recently Uber was taken to court in UK over drivers' welfare and the case was judged in favor of the drivers.
Can this apply to the thousands of Uber drivers in Nigeria? Nigeria with its huge population is a huge and profitable market to Uber and others like it. However, the thousands of drivers who make money for Uber are not well catered for. No protection or welfare like hospital or accident coverage for these drivers. These drivers are being casualized which is against ILO law. Something needs to be done. These our drivers should be protected because lots of families are dependent on them.
We need to speak out especially bringing to public glare drivers who were involved in accidents and attacked by armed robbers or with serious health challenge(s) and have received no help from Uber, Bolt etc.
Let them speak out by sharing their stories.

You haven’t told us the judgment

The jugdment was a historic one. The UK Supreme court gave a judgement that Uber drivers should be classified as workers meaning they are now entitled to minimum wage, holiday pay and protection.

You can do well to publish it here. Maybe Nigerian lawyers will study it and approach the courts too

Labour law is dead in Nigeria.

In some private primary and secondary schools across Nigeria, they pay their staffs less than 33k. Some they even pay 15k and less.

Can you imagine such nonsense

A single man can't even live comfortably in Lagos with a salary of 33k, not to now talk of a person earning 20k.

20k in a year is just 240k. Anybody earning 240k in Lagos will have to be living in a one room in a ghetto area.

If Uber drivers are now disgnated as workers and not contractors, it means this same law should be applied in Nigeria. Our lawyers can study the judgement and fight for our people here in Nigeria. Nigeria is a big market for money making.
The terrible situation uber and bolt drivers are facing each day is despicable and we need to speak out.

This judgment sound great in theory but there are problems with implementation
especially in Nigeria.

First, Uber drivers in Nigeria already make much more than minimum wage.

Second, many Uber drivers in Nigeria switch between different providers such as Bolt.
Are they going to be designated as Uber driver or Bolt driver or will they be considered
workers of all companies they are affiliated with?

What this judgement basically give drivers in Nigeria is the equivalent of a government employee
earning minimum wage and with health insurance.

I don't know any Uber driver who is at the level of a minimum wage worker in Nigeria.

A better approach is to investigate the unique issues facing Nigerian Uber drivers and work on
that rather than envying the British drivers who operate under different circumstances.

I know there are Uber drivers languishing in hospitals or seriously in difficulties that need to take up this judgment to better their lives and families. Due to lack of jobs educated and able bodied men are now into Uber. They must be protected.
