This is an age old debate and I have not found a concrete reply.

Many people argue that the church is rich already and so instead of further enriching the church, it is best to "tithe to the poor" . Personally, my church hardly does street outreach in terms of giving or blessing the community, it is always evangelism. So I am on the side of giving to the less priviledged around you.

But Leviticus 27:30 says, “A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord: it is holy to the Lord.” These gifts were a reminder that everything belonged to God and a portion was given back to God to thank him for what they had received. Does giving back to God neccesarily mean giving to the church?

Is giving directly to the church any different from giving to the poor in your community?

You pay to the church, then it's left for the pastor to use it for necessary things, which may include helping the needy. Most churches do reach out to the needy, if your pastor is not doing it, that is his query to answer with God. That does not mean you can't reach out to help the poor, many people who pay tithes in churches, still help the poor if they have extra.

I'm not qualified to add to this.

But if there're no reason to give to the Church, think of how they run the Church in terms of electricity and more.

That's what I've been thinking lately.

9 Let us not grow weary or become discouraged in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap, if we do not give in.
