You can tell members of your family you TRUST so they know what to expect from you and make them understand that you have your own projects and financial goals too. You can discuss it with colleagues in the same field that you are COMFORTABLE with, you might be collecting way less than you should be or missing out on better paying companies and opportunities. This why I like platforms like Reddit or Glassdoor, oyinbo are ready to share information that can be helpful compared to what you get on Nairaland. I think it is a culture thing. Well, some one can ask when he's getting a paid slot or has options especially in MDAs for employment.
If you are a civil servant, a lot of people will know your pay form the kind of MDAs you work.
Imagine someone working with NNPC says I earn 70k, DPR 65k, PEF 90K, FIRS 80K NCMDB 95K cheesy

if kidnappers catch you eehh, you go pay all the millions you get in upfront & other allowances

If there anyone that should know maybe your spouse, else it's foolishness to tell others. It's not any business of theirs.

It could breed envy and who knows in these dangerous times, one can use it so estimate your worth if you are kidnapped. Don't bring trouble to yourself

I see this from another perspective. I'm not in support of telling everyone what you earn however, I think it isn't a big deal in the West as people use the information to know how to negotiate a raise at their current job or for their prospective jobs if they are in similar fields and it's never about competition.
