olat, which application development would you like to specialized in? Java can be used in developing lots of application, examples

1. Web Application
2. Standalone Application
3. Wireless Application
4. Enterprise Business Application
5. Games Application
6. And many more,

If I know your area of specialty I would advice you and give you my own recommendation including jobs prospect and learning curves

You may want to visit here for Java tutorials posted by gbengaijot's handle

@sbucareer,
I have already joined the thread initiated by gbengaijot. You 'll recall that I submitted my assignment to u last night. I'm also hoping to do the recent assignment tonight/tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, as for speciality, my interest is in (a) Wireless Application and (b) Enterprise Business Applications.

Once again, thanks SBUcareer.

olat, I seem to misplace people a lot, never mind, your assignment was brilliant and I have answered your question in the other thread. Regarding becoming Enterprise Application Developer or Wireless Application Developer. If you are going to use java as your tool, you will need lots of development with Java tool. You do not need to learn J2EE or J2ME, which are for Enterprise Application and Wireless Application development framework respectively.

All you need is to grasp the basis of java and think like a Software Engineer NOT programmer. Believe me continue with the Java tutorial and learn as much as you can and talk to me after one year with Java, I will show you the part to take in Wireless or Enterprise Systems.

Remember, take Java as an investment and see the yield after one year in terms of knowledge and jobs prospect. Buy books and spend at least 16hrs a week studying java. Create you own time table (Gnat Chart) for the whole year. Do lots of practice than reading, if you do not understand anything post it here I will be happy to answer it for you if I can, If we cannot find solutions we can post it to experts-exchange, don't worry I have an account with them and I go by the handle sbucareer.

lots and lots of love to u sbucareer.
I will be glad if it really works out well.

I work on contract with ETB - Equitorial Trust Bank Ltd. So, the pay is a far cry from expectation. angry
That doesn't bothers me really. I've got my focus right. The slow pace of responding to ur assignment was 'cos I am preparing for the CISSP exam in April.
But I promise to remain consistent with ur encouragement. Then after April, I will start firing with greater concentration. I hope and pray it all work out well. I am sure u must be an Enterprise business application developer.
Once again, thanx a million.
Let me quickly get back to ur assignment.

olat, I don't know how you can manage to get it, but if you can, you can NEVER fail your exams. Visit Test King. If you buy any of their certification and read all the question in that package, normally it is about 250 questions in one product.

I think CISSP cert. is 60 questions and must pass 45 or something like that to get the cert. Believe me olat, if you can study all the 250 questions or more in a product like CISSP, 60 of those questions will come out. I can bet you money if you want.

The problem is how to buy the product since you people in Nigeria do not have credit cards or something like that. But if you can, stop reading and just buy testking and pass all your exams.

It all includes Java, MCSE, CCNA, CISSP etc.

Re: Software Development On Java by olat(m): 10:10pm On Feb 23, 2006
@SBUcareer, I don't think testking works for CISA and CISSP. Those that have attempted the test before in the fora (www.cccure.org). www.cissp.com etc. Have all testify the need to read, read and read to understand the principles involves in IT security. Well, I will want to agree with u that it works well for other exams, CCNA, MCSE, MCDBA,MCSA etc but for CISA, CISSP (I doubt).

All said, if u come across anybody that have it and can be of help, I wouln't mind getting it, however, I keep reading.

Hi sbu, guess I cant refute your statement but I want to ask, does testking work for scjp and other java exams too?
Re: Software Development On Java by Bossman(m): 6:00pm On Apr 28, 2006
If by testing, you mean taking mock exams online. Yes, for SCJP and SCWCD it definitely helps to take a lot of mock exams. You also want to read the appropriate certification books for these exams. Even though there is nothing as good as experience, having these certifications under your belt would give you a very good understanding of the concepts. (heck! you are forced to know it). It also looks very good on your resume.

Hey sbu, the primary thing that's making me not get serious with java is standalone apps: people dont like it when u tell them " u need jre1.4.2 to run my program" or "you have to launch it from the console" Apart from that, most of the libraries available to me are C/C++. Do you know a clean way of creating point-click-and-launch Java apps? and do you think Java has a hope with embedded devices?
Re: Software Development On Java by sbucareer(f): 3:25pm On Jun 28, 2006

Sorry Gridlock, I am just seeing your post now. Java/C/C++ are very good language for embedded systems. The best is C/C++ because of its nature of being closest to machine interface i.e. binary and electrical impulses.

Saying that, Java always need an interpreter, the JVM (Java Virtual Marchine), which is just isn't anything complicated. If you are planning of using Java as an embedded system, we have java for SDN and a little tutorial on java embedded systems.

Why java was built to need an interpreter was to solve portability and other issues faced by C/C++. When you develop a C/C++ embedded system, to modify them would involve reserve engineering, which is very costly.

Embedded systems are signal oriented, all the application running inside the systems needs is, the signal like TV remote control. Embedded system is quite different because you have to work with the initial design of the hardware, providing all the input/outputs ports for integration.

You can use Java to build you or web server, save it on a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM and develop all your fanstatic web pages and deploy them with a Read only media. The read only media i.e. DVD-ROM is the system all you do is embed (burn) your application and server into it.

Java could be used for virtually any application I can think on earth, but it might not fully solve that particular problem effectively, but submit your issues with Java forum some guru will develop all the API you need for your apps, is that not fantastic.

Re: Software Development On Java by sbucareer(f): 3:35pm On Jun 28, 2006

Gridlock, coming to standalone apps, it is equally important to grasp and understand swings. If I am developing web application for generally public comsuption, I'd use web apps. If the admin need to administer the web apps like view all orders, inventory, cancel order, process payments etc. I will not design a web apps version of it, if the customer is security conscience.

Why? The web apps would use request protocol via http protocol and making use of or calling the Remote beans object. Whilst the desktop for admin will use RMI/RPC protocol via COBRA making use of Local bean objects.

Remember you can NEVER access a Local bean object from remote location, this is one of the JVM security. That way either someone break into the company and hack the PC and desktop app password to cancel order or approve credit card process.

You see the use is quite disperse. The bottom line is that you could be in a greater opportunity to learn web app and desktop app together using Java technologies

Re: Software Development On Java by sbucareer(f): 8:20pm On Jul 01, 2006

Gridlock, also there is a software called JexePack it can help you to convert your java files into a native executable WIN32 32bits application.

But why do you want to do that? How much would it cost a user to install a JRE on their machine? Mind you, you don't need the JSDK.  You only need the Java Runtime Environment.

When you finish developing your application, package them in .jar by issuing the following command. Here is a tutorial

java -cp whatever.jar -Dsome.property MyApp

When you have successfully created a jar file and make sure your provide the class with the main method to execute it thread upon double click, there you have it.

Double click your jar file your program will startup. You can create a shortcut to desktop and assign the jar file an icon.

Remember, to run a desktop apps, you ONLY need the JRE. If you are a developer you will need the JSDK. Some clever application will try to connect to internet and download a JRE for you if it cannot find a local JRE. So, for novice they do not need to do any thing.

If it was a software that need installing, the JRE will be installed automatically if it cannot find any local JRE or the proper version.
