Like a good doctor, Chisom Ekilons said, getting the right treatment for staph is not enough! There are precautions to take to ensure a complete cure and avoid any form of comebacks. I have listed 4 precautions you should take when treating Staphylococcus urinary tract infection, number 4 is often done wrong.

1. Avoid Alcohol: Antibiotics have side effects and these side effects materialize differently on different consumers. Taking alcohol and antibiotics triggers a host of unpleasant side effects. It can also make you dehydrated and affect your sleep which makes it harder for your body to aid the antibiotics in fighting the infection.

- Avoid Alcohol throughout the period of treatment and wait at least 48hours after treatment before taking any alcohol.

2. Maintain Personal Hygiene: Staph infection can survive on a surface for a while until it finds an entry point into your body. It’s important to maintain good and proper hygiene as you obviously have the infection and can possibly transfer it to any surface.

- Wash your bed sheets and clothes properly. Wash your towels and sponge regularly, soak them in hot water each time to kill off bacteria.

3. Avoid Sexual Intercourse: Apart from the fact that you risk infecting your partner, then you can get back the infection from your partner, antibiotics lowers the effectiveness of birth control pills. Also sexual intercourse may be uncomfortable and painful.

- Avoid sexual intercourse till treatment is over.

4. Sterilize Your Underwear: Your underwear is the landing spot of urinary discharge and bacteria latching onto the underwear is the reason for many staph comebacks. It’s important to sterilize your underwear every time you wash them throughout the period of treatment.

- A lot of people have opted for soaking the underwear in bleach, while the chemical from the bleach can kill the bacteria, it also poses a risk to you as the underwear covers a sensitive part of your body. Another method employed by many is ironing the underwear, this has many variables: Your iron might not be properly heated or you could miss a spot when you iron. This is why the most effective means of sterilizing your underwear is to soak it in hot water.
