Chelsea Spent €80 Million On A Backup Goalkeeper — A Good Investment? by 9janewsbumper(m): 7:52am On Feb 18, 2022
Chelsea are world and European champions and their trusted goalkeeper has played his part in the success. However, not as expected.

Not very important either. When the London club spent 80 million euros to make Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga the most expensive ever, they were expecting great things to happen. As the emaciated, clear-headed goalkeeper promoted by La Liga side Athletic Club, he will be the basis for his trophy-winning career.

Chelsea won more honours after beating Brazilian club Palmeiras in the Club World Cup final and were the first English side to lift the trophy this season. Besides in the United Arab Emirates and the Premier League, there is someone else who has made the most saves this season: Eduoard Mendy.

Mendy's transfer fee was less than a third of Kepa's, leaving Ligue 1 No. 1 club Rennes for around 24 million euros ($27 million). Kepa's shortcomings are obvious, and the Senegalese star has officially replaced him as a capable No 1. It seems like a bad thing to bet on a stunning talent at Kepa and be disappointed.

Curiously, however, it has proven successful. Individually, Chelsea have the best odds given Kepa's sometimes questionable form. Mendy, on the other hand, - the unlikely number one - still has a top-notch goalkeeper to contend with, which will only make him better.

Chelsea are one of the best goalkeepers in European football. In such a reality, money becomes secondary. Manchester City and Liverpool, depending on who you ask, will compete for the Premier League title. Nonetheless, Chelsea still need to prepare for the Carabao Cup final, not to mention the Champions League and FA Cup, as they aim to build on their recent performances. In the end, that's what matters.

Kepa has collected millions in transfer fees, but being in the Spanish national team remains an afterthought. Head coach Luis Enrique remains loyal to David De Gea and Unai Simon, who played as defenders at the last World Cup and European Championships respectively. The inconsistency of the Chelsea kit was problematic, but as Edouard Mendy won the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, his performances boosted his profile again. It also shows his spiritual strength.

Some stunning Kepa performances are enough to leave some unconvinced - as is often the case with the impatient nature and fees of modern football fans. However, it was a squad game and the 27-year-old played his part. Although in a different position, Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish has spent a record 120 million euros ($236 million) for a British player, but this season's figures have not been the best. He scored two goals and scored two goals. Has he raised the bar for the Premier League champions' squad? Almost certainly. Kepa is in the same boat.

Chelsea should think twice about releasing the Spaniard, unless he seeks a new challenge. His current contract expires in 2025, and at his age, he still has many prosperous years ahead of him, particularly as a goalkeeper. During that time, whether he plays or not, he can contribute to goalkeeping stability.

That would be beneficial to Chelsea and provide a good return on investment. Whether or not he complies will most likely be determined by how frequently he plays.
