A first class graduate, Mr Sule Mathew, has been reportedly killed by unknown gunmen in Anambra.

Mathew who studied Information and Media Studies recently bagged first class from the Faculty of Communication, Bayero University Kano.

He was killed along with some passengers he was travelling with in Ekwulobia, a town in Anambra, news platform, PR Nigeria, where he once interned, made the announcement.

According to a fellow ex-intern at PR Nigeria, Silas Manager, Mathew had planned to go for the mandatory youth service corps before his death.

“Mathew was among the first set of students to intern with PRNigeria Centre in Kano in 2019. He lost his father in June, few months to his final examination, and graduated as the overall best student of our Department in August 2021 and was due to enrol for mandatory NYSC programme next week,” Salis said.

“He was on a 6-month non-residential fellowship program that trains, and mentors young citizen activists to push for democratic reforms – Gidan Yanci. He was on his way to Anambra from Abuja when the gunmen attacked their vehicle” a tear-filled Mr Gambo Ibrahim, a bosom

“After waylaying them, the gunmen opened fire on them killing all of them except the driver who escaped. So, when we couldn’t reach him and hear of the incidence, we sent Sule’s picture to the mortuary to confirm if he was among those killed and we got feedback that he was identified among those killed,” she narrated.

“Prior to this sad news, I kept calling him on phone but couldn’t reach him then suddenly we heard this sad news. I am so shocked,” Binta Musawa, Mr Sule’s coursemate stated.

But first-class-graduate is not relevant in this post. Even a barrow pusher is equally a human. A bus conductor is not less human than a first class graduate. Let us learn to avoid sentiments when addressing critical issues. After all, first-class does not guarantee first-class benefits to society. A non graduate or a third-class graduate can treat society better than a first-class graduate. What matters here is that we have sadly lost a life, being a first-class graduate makes no difference here.

Other passengers died with him. Will you use first-class or third class to report their deaths? Using fir-class to report this one implies he is more important than those who died with him, and it is very wrong. Praise his excellence during his graduation and promotions. Not when reporting his death, considering the fact that other people also died in the same incident.

You can be a first class scholar or first class barrow pusher. I believe in praising excellence no matter the field. it is not easy. All lives might be equal, but excellence makes the difference and It should be recognized.

The killing is highly condemnable. But it's wickedness to only play up this first class ish as if others that lost their lives doesn't matter because they're not first class graduates.

Praise excellence when the person is alive. Praise him during his graduation and promotions. Not when reporting his death, especially when other people died in the same incident. Will you add third-class when reporting his fellow passengers that were also killed by the same gunmen? Using first-class to report his own death implies that he is more important than other people that died with him.
