Nice analysis, but there are a number of conjectures which seem to be skewered to justify Russian invasion of Ukraine.

One key thing I believe needs to be corrected is that the present territory of Ukraine was never a part of the present Russia until about the 17th century when it was annexed by Poland & the old Russian empire. Also, it was not until about the early 1900s that it was incoporated into the old Soviet Union...

In essence, Ukraine, pre-annexation, was an independent nation & it is that independence & freedom to freely associate with other nations that Russia is now attacking...

Second, if Russia was concerned about just the Lusk & Donk (abbreviations) regions in Ukraine, what are its armies doing in Kiev? Why is putin calling for an overthrow of the Ukrainian government? Why not occupy the disputed territory & defend it?

Third, it is true that Russia would feel threatened having NATO so close (we will come back to this), but is the invasion of Ukraine the way forward? Putin could have imposed political, economic, social & diplomatic sanctions to great effect. Even going as far as having Ukraine quarantined on land, sea & air (a form of blockade) of military hardware assistance to show its displeasure at having Ukraine join NATO.

Fourth, Poland, Estonia etc are already NATO members & share land with Russia... if putin's grouse is to be justified, then, it means he would also invade those countries...

Intelligently and succinctly put.... I feel Putin is Insecure.... Meanwhile, Majority of Russian nationals ain't in support of this Invasion

You are filled with Western Media lies. Tell us what justified Americans attacks on Libya and Iraq. Why is nato(America) moving closer to Russia. Why didn't Ukraine work towards developing economical for now instead of trying to develop military wise through American help.Who are they trying to show power of force. Why is Dubai more interested in developing economical which is always better for her citizens.American want to check mate Russia military might just as they are fighting China on its economic strength too.Is unfortunately Ukraine allowed its country to be the pawn in the game of cold war that has prevailed btw the two for long.

Na matured minds dey here so far. I pray these loudmouth fellows won't bring tantrums to this scholastic analysis.

My inputs undecided

From a Nigeria prism we will get to understand that the situation between Russia and Ukraine borders more on economic security above territorial dispute but however boils down to National security, sequel to the unrest in South-East Nigeria (Biafran agitation).

Those of us with the knowledge of the Nord 1 & 2 politics will understand the grievances of the Ukraine government and why the dangle the monster seed (NATO) before Russia; whom perceived this as an unwarranted effrontery by them hence the invasion.
Why did Russia invade a sovereign state is the argument propagated by the western media, right? Then you ask yourself, why a perceived sovereign and democratic country not heed to the cry of the oppressed ethnic Russians who want out from the unruly marriage. Why is western media not projecting this abuse of fundemental human rights by oppressive Ukrainian government? Why! This is simple becuase Ukraine basked on the euphoria of the West backings (who have ulterior motives of checkmating Russia) which grieved the Russians at such hypocrisy and how wrong it is; despite them taking conflict and oppression to ethnic Russians in that region.

The aggression from Ukraine started since Russia announce the emergency of Nord 2 which will bypass their economy strength, hence their shortsighted pawn moves.

Let us stop being emotional when analysis international politics. What was USA response in Cuba when Russia wanted to pally with them?

Well, from some comments, a few pro-russian elements obviously feel otherwise & seem to want to justify the invasion by going down history of US military interference in other countries, the NATO expansion etc.

US military interference in other nations has often being condemned by the Eastern block & neutrals just as is vice versa. Without justifying US invasions, apart from the various conquests & wars of the Russian empire pre-1900s, Russia has invaded, interfered in a national conflict and/or had military conflicts with other countries such as;

Kazakhstan
Finland
Latvia
Estonia
Lithuania
Georgia
Poland
Azerbaijan
Armenia
Mongolia
Afghanistan
Romania
China
Japan
Romania
Spain
Vietnam
Cambodia
Laos
Korea
Hungary
Czech
Angola
Ethiopia
CAR
Ukraine...

Some of these nations have been invaded multiple times by Russia...

Now, specifically for this Ukraine conflict, Russian could have used sanctions to effectively cripple Ukraine... there was no need for armed conflict.

It is difficult to understand this without going back to World War 2 and the Cold War.
The issues did not start in 2014

Facts
24 million Soviets died in WW II
This was after Hitler signed a non aggression pact with Stalin. He then attacked neighbouring Poland, Romania etc Stalin thought he was safe but then Hitler attacked and broke the pact.
He attacked through these neighbouring countries .
Eventually the Red Army pushed them back to Berlin and captured Berlin They divided the city and the country with the West
When it ended 24 million Soviet lives were lost
This was all possible because those neighbouring countries were conquered .So Russia feels that if those countries are in the hands of enemies its security is threatened

So the security situation after the WW II was based on consensus which then entered the Cold War the status quo of the Cold war was the Iron curtain which was thousand miles away from Moscow. Now once again it is close by with hostile forces . In Russia's mind the betrayal of Hitler and the price is very fresh. That is their mindset and NATO''s refusal to discuss means war whether they like it or not . It is either they shift or they fight
