what is the criteria for such ratings? is it publications, number of PHD's, faculty to student ratio, research funding or what? any sule, kweku and tatinda can sit down and draw up rankings as they please, and I am pretty certain they did not go and visit all those institutions before making the rankings. |

University ratings are made annually. Thus, a university that rates 1 this year may rate 2 next year. These ratings are based on number of publications from researchers in each university; quality of the research; number of PhD graduates churned out per year; jobs obtained by PhD graduates from these universities, which is an indication of the quality of the PhD degree obtained; presence in the ww web (adverstise your university to the world) and other considerations. How many Naija unis have functional and standard websites? So you see why Nigeria does poorly consistently: Lack of funding by the government. This completely explains why big companies in Nigeria prefer foreign universities-trained Nigerians than those trained in Nigerian universities. |

the rankings are based on web visibility and the number of published articles you can get from search engines and the like, and number of online courses and so on, that is a good measure of 'web presence/popularity' but cannot be a good judge of the true quality of a university. obviously, with higher internet access amongst other things the SA univeristies come up tops, the rankings are not of much use if you ask me. |

If you publish quality research in good international journals, you get noticed easily. What will many Nigerian universities publish? Effect of fertilizer on corn growth in Aba, Benin, Abeokuta etc? (lol) published at the journal of Oshodi science? Nigerian research (say in the field of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth sciences, Biotechnology, Medicine etc, is way off the mark. Type in a notable Nigerian prof (living and working in Nigeria at the moment) in any of the academic search engines and see what you find for many of them. Shame. |

This ranking by webometrics is an indirect measure, i.e., it utilizes "web presence" as a key measure for ranking universities. This hyper modern technique deviates from classical techniques which emphasis factors such as: [list] [li]peer assessment[/li] [li]quality of education[/li] [li]student selectivity[/li] [li] quality of faculty[/li] [li]faculty resources[/li] [li]research output[/li] [li]graduation rate and performance[/li] [li] size of institution[/li] [li]financial resources[/li] [li]alumni giving[/li] [li]retention rate[/li] [/list] Such traditional criteria (e.g., as listed) are used by older and arguably more established ranking outfits like the US News & World Report (http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/rankindex_brief.php), Academic Ranking of World Universities (http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2005/ARWU2005TOP500list.htm), and Guardian University Guide (http://education.guardian.co.uk/universityguide2008/0,,2027789,00.html). The argument can also be made that, in today's information age, "web presence" correlates highly with some of the listed criteria, however, such an argument is unlikely to be true for some if not many of those criteria. |

Thanks for elucidating the point I was trying to make - the mere absence/ small size of an online presence is not a good enough judge of a university there is far more that makes a university good/highly ranked. not to discount the point that our universities are in bad shape, we need investment in the sector really urgently, but not only in cosmetic areas like putting up a nice website without true functionality or offering lots of online courses of no benefit to anyone. we need applicable and directed improvement of our schools to jump start our economy and knowledge base growth |

@debosky, you're welcome. In addition to the points you raised, many of the top class graduates from our Nigerian universities are ignored by the government (and many in the private sector). Top schools in the UK, US and Canada aggressively seek out such graduates and offer them admissions (most times with some form of financial aid). They finish their studies and remain in those Western countries. Nigeria has lost so many top brains this way, and they hardly ever come back. In a system where higher education is encouraged, these graduates (especially those with advanced degrees like PhDs) would be encouraged to come back to Nigeria so as to take over from the retiring set of Nigerian professors. What is happening now is that, unlike before, most foreigners are not interested in teaching in Nigerian universities. Likewise, most Nigerians aren't interested either. So, how are we going to replace the retiring Nigerian professors? |

babyosisi: exactment, we have many other serious issues in this country, but some people choose to turn a blind eye and focus on unnecessary issues. Our educational system is in shamblessss, imagine the best uni in Nigeria is number 4904! thank God that we Nigerians are naturally talented if not our average IQ would have been less than a drunken fish if left to the educational institution!! i am just soo upset with this country! too many problems! we are messing up big time! |
