hey comp gurus, i'm not really a beginner in computing/computers but i'm not exactly a pro,
i just finished my MCITP exams and i want to diversitify(if there's anything like that) from networking to alil bit of database
but this is where the confusion sets in, i dont know which dbms i should learn, (between oracle and microsoft sql obviously).
i tried googling it, but every site/ blog kept on bringing out their advantages and usefulness and blah blah,
i wanna know which 1 is really useful or relevant in the job market, (im still a student and i have no idea yet.) cos both of them are quite similar,

pls i would like to know what evey1 thinks, im not asking which is better cos i know they are both good, i jst need opinions 2 help me decide which 1 2 focus on more and maybe write the certification exam,
1ox smiley

Definitely Oracle.

If you are programmer/developer, I do not think any recruiter will disqualify you based on not knowing one or the other. Just make sure you have a good grasp of RDBMS. Whatever database you use to learn it is fine. You can easily transfer your knowledge from one to the other. Now, if you are looking into getting into Database administration, it could be different. You just need to learn the one that's used mostly.

@bossman thanks, but which 1 is most used

Here in the US, I believe it's oracle. As a consultant though, I have developed applications that access all the main RDBMS. Oracle, Sqlserver, DB2, mysql, etc.

@bossman, if i may ask you a question,i've bn trying to oracle10g XE edition but its quite funny,its nt responding but i want to know if i deploy an application and use d DB for my back end.
2. Is it true that sun java prometric exams are free after the first trial, sun java is now a subsidiary of oracle corp., what is the likelyhood that java programs(enterprise apps) will have to be written in connection with oracle DB as the back end

I will try to answer as much as I understand of what you are asking.

1. I am not aware of any information that indicates that the prometric exams will be free after the first trial.
2. Java applications can be written to connect to any of the mainstream RDBM's.

@OP

Note they are almost the same though with different vendor, architure and SQL syntax (Oracle uses P/SQL while SQL server uses T/SQL). I will advise you to start with Oracle because it mostly used by big coporation and enterprise environment than others, then learn SQL server if you want to target the medium and small scale companies. Both are fine, the more you know them the better DB programmer/admin you become. Good Luck
