1. Fenugreek (ERU in Yoruba)
Fenugreek seed, also known as Methi, is an Indian herb that aids metabolism. It lowers cholesterol and triglyceride level. Fenugreek is excellent for the digestion of carbohydrates and sugar.

If you have borderline diabetes, this seed is great for preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes. It also comes in the form of a capsule as a supplement good for lowering blood sugar levels and stimulating insulin release. You can add fenugreek as an herb in your cooking or take it with warm water.

2. Garlic
Garlic, also known as Allium Sativum, is an antioxidant used in the treatment of various diseases, including diabetes. Although its effect is minimal, garlic can lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure levels. It also protects against heart attack due to its anti-clotting properties. If you are sensitive to garlic, you might experience heartburn and flatulence.

3. Alpha-Lipoic Acid
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is an antioxidant usually found in foods like potatoes, spinach, and broccoli. ALA supplements can help manage diabetic neuropathy and damage done to the nerves by diabetes. It also breaks down carbohydrates to make energy while reducing diabetic symptoms like tingling and prickling feet.

4. Okra
Okra is also called ladyfinger. It is a ‘super food’ for people with diabetes and cancer. Okra has positive control of blood sugar and is also a great source of dietary fiber. You can cut and soak okra pieces in water and then drink the juice to decrease your fasting blood sugar level.

5. Aloe Vera
Long-term use of aloe Vera decreases fasting blood sugar. Aloe Vera helps decrease lipids in people with abnormally high blood molecules, such as type 2 diabetes. It increases insulin levels and also reduces oxidative stress. This makes it a good supplement against diabetic kidney disease and anxiety.
