Go for that which you have passion for.

But mind you, banking job is seen as modern day slavery, there is no career prospect in it.
Like how do you mean Sir/Ma?

Good day Nairalander, i held A B.eng in civil Engineering about 5years ago, did nysc in a manufacturing company, i didn't get the required site experience expected of a civil engineer during nysc, afterwards did some free lance site Engineering works, later got a contract job in a top commercial bank, now am confused, tried integrating myself into the IT WORLD, taking courses on data analytics, and the likes but finding it difficult almost a year now, I did not understand anything, please advise me

If you are still interested in the Civil Engineering field kindly use your banking job gather funds. Use your every opportunity to search for Engineering job, most especially in Lekki axis of Lagos. There are enough opportunities for Engineers in that axis.

start learning on your own. Try building a cheat sheet using excel , dont memorize codes, just understand it line by line by translating it to english language.
Look at w3schools dot com, look at the data analytics part with the reference functions and the examples, practice along. Use youtube to practice. Use kaggle dot com to get dataset and also look at the examples there too to practice. Without practicing you would not remember anything.

He needs a solid learning path, not just these random stuffs you are recommending for him.

U are just talking trash.
Without banking I would been in a mess in this country.

It is only in Nigeria everyone talks about money and no one is talking about learning something that would help him or her after their time in the job.

See,let me tell u my story,in 2012 I was in a banking job that paid me 48k after deductions and I stayed on the Job for 4years plus and garnered all the experiences I needed and I thereafter set up a loan business which I make good sums from.
In fact, from January to date,I have made #11,484,000 in profits and my estimated projected profit for 2022 was 12million but as u can see,I am almost meeting my target for the year.

So,stop calling it a slave job when u can learn something while on the job and still established yourself tomorrow.

Note well:
I started my business with 300k and I have grown the capital to 69million naira for the past 10 years.

Don't discourage people from doing what they want to do just because u don't like it.

Since you do not understand the IT stuff, dont force yourself into it. Also note that the contract job you are into in the bank holds no tangible future for you or your career (except you are lucky to be converted to core staff). My advice is that you should build more on your civil engineering career by pursuing more certifications and experience in it and by attempting any job opportunity you come across in that field.

Bro, I understand Wht you're going through. I studied civil engineering too, some 5 years back. Haven't worked as an engineer for one day in my life. Yes, I know how to design architectural and structural designs, but there aren't enough oppurtunities out there. I'm switching to tech now, UI/UX precisely. Hopefully, there'll be light at the end of this tunnel.

I will advise you find your way back into the civil engineering field....,particularly construction. the pay is not that much at the entry level stage but it gets better with time and fast..as you progress from being a mere site supervisor to project manager.... to the stage of even taking on projects on your own and submitting bids for government projects... this is a field that can continue to earn you dividends well int your late age... and so I'd advise you not let it go just like that.,.... should you decide to veer into I.T.. Just my thoughts though.

Based on my personal experience, please go and take up your contract job.

The answer to your question would be clearer within a year, and never rule out the possibility of being a practicing engineer.

B.eng in civil engineering is one of coveted courses in Nigeria.

Nigeria is still developing economy with alot of civil constructions going on and more is underway.

It was unfortunate you didn't expose yourself to practical aspect of civil engineering. But you still have opportunities to have the experience.

However you have to suffer yourself for at least 6months to learn

Your career in contract job at Bank is a road to perdition

You'll get there brother. I spent months to master Structural Analysis and Design after my masters, nothing was forthcoming. I took interest in Occupational Health and Safety at some point, had to take a job with a little salary at NBC to learn the ropes. I wrote my certification examinations and after 2 years, I found my way back to the construction industry as a Construction Safety Manager.
I love tech too hence, I enrolled for Google's certificate in Data Analytics on Coursera which has been fun so far.
Giving up isn't an option. We'll get there.

Guy na better course you do.. course wey some dey regret say den for do.
Civil Engineering is the best so far on Nigeria cos Nigeria is still under developing.
My advice for you is that if you have passion for the course you study dust your certificate and get a job. Most construction company don't need you to have so much experience just know this basics and you will learn as you stay in the field.. internet has also made things easy for people.. you will see that within 6months you have improve so much.
