Update 92

Lola stared at him and said, “There are things you don’t know about me, especially about my background. The only reason I have been weak against these people hurting me is just because I don’t want to hurt my family. We have suffered enough shame already. I did not come from a poor home, Junior. At least we can still afford whatever we want. It was I who stopped my mother from bringing me to school in her car because my classmates feel like I think I am better than them. They stopped me from allowing my parents bring me to school in their cars. I wanted to please them. I wanted them to like me. So I stopped coming in our personal cars. I decided to take the school bus like many of them. But that did not change their hatred for me. No matter what I do for them, they always treat me unkindly. They have forbidden me from being brought from home and taken home by my mother, yet they don’t want me to use the bus. They don’t want me dead, yet they don’t want me to live. If I tell my parents about this, I know what they are going to do. They are going to change my school. But I am tired of that, Junior. I am tired of going from one school to another. You have no idea how many schools I have attended in my life. The switching of schools has affected me academically. I am tired already. Rather than switch schools again, I would rather not go to school at all anymore. No matter how many schools I switch, I am still being treated badly. I have decided that I am not going to change schools again, no matter what these students do to me. I won’t give them the pleasure of being the reason for my leaving this school. No matter what they do to me, I will always pick myself up again and continue living my life.”

Junior shook his head. “No, this is not a way to live. You are allowing fear to lead your life. If it continues this way it will consume you. I don’t care about your history or background. It does not matter what your parents did – that is their choice. You have your own choice to make. You can’t allow your parents’ dark shadows cast a gloom on your own life. You have to fight for yourself. It is not your duty to protect your parents, it’s supposed to be the other way round. I don’t know what your parents have done, and I don’t care. All I know is that there is nothing they have done that could have been worse than what I experienced in my own life, or what I found out about my own parents. No, I am not saying that my parents are evil people. No, far from it. Actually, I have the best parents in the world. But sometimes, even angels commit a little sin – but life must continue. So you owe nobody anything, not even your parents. You have to live your own life and defend yourself. How long are you going to continue feeling sorry for yourself? How long will you continue to trek home when you know it’s your right to be on that same bus as the rest of the students? When you stand up for yourself, those bullies will leave you alone and find other people to oppress. They have psychologically oppressed you so much that you find no more worth in yourself. That is no way for anyone to live, not even the worst people on the planet. And from the few past hours that I have known you, I don’t think you are so bad to deserve what you are facing in the hands of your peers. You need to stand up and fight for yourself. I can’t fight for you because that will only show how weak you are. What if I am not around? What if life throws us apart? Won’t you be able to defend yourself? The first step to recovery is to stand your ground and repel whatever attack is thrown at you.”

The girl nodded and said, “I will try. You are the only person who has told me something like this. Everyone else always watches me suffer and laugh. They enjoy seeing me suffer so much. You are the only one who has not laughed at me in class today. And I am deeply grateful for that. It is really nice to know that there is someone who does not have fun by my suffering.”

Junior smiled and shook his hand towards her. “Friends?”

The girl looked at the hand, then at Junior. She smiled broadly this time around; the broad smile seemed to make her a lot more beautiful. She grabbed the hand and said, “FFL.”

Junior frowned. “What’s that?”

“Friends for life.”

“Oh,” the boy nodded. “I like that.” he paused and said, “You don’t have to walk home, Lola.”

“I have no choice. I don’t have transport fare. And I am not going to take your money if you offer it.”

Junior shook his head. “No, that’s not want I intend to do. Instead, I want you to come in my personal car.”

She opened her eyes wide. “Your personal car?”

Junior smiled and said, “I mean my dad’s car; but he always tells me that the car belongs to me. When I am old enough to drive, I can drive it myself. However, Tony is already teaching me how to drive it. Still, I know that the car would already be out of fashion by the time I am of the legal age to drive. I won’t be caught driving an old car around.”

Lola laughed.

“My father or Tony would come and pick me up. I’m sure it’s going to be Tony, anyway. I want you to join us when Tony comes to pick me. We can drop you home on our way to our place. That’s if you don’t mind.”

“I don’t want to bother you,” said Lola, “I don’t even know if this Tony will agree to do that.”

“Tony does whatever I tell him to do,” replied Junior, “You don’t have to worry about that.”

“Who is this Tony?”

Junior smiled. “Tony is a very nice person. You will like him.”

They both left the class and walked towards the school gate, just around the same spot Junior’s father had parked their car in the morning. As they reached there, Tony was just parking the car, too. Junior was glad to see that it was Tony who had come instead of his father. He knew his father would not have refused giving Lola a lift, of course, but the trip would be more interesting with Tony behind the wheel. With Tony, Junior usually felt like a boss, as opposed to feeling like a little boy whenever he was with his father.

When Tony sighted Junior approaching, his familiar smile appeared. “Unior back,” he said excitedly.

Lola initially thought Tony had said ‘Union Bank’ until Junior explained to him. She got to understand that Tony could not speak well, and that he suffered from a disease that could be referred to as cerebral palsy – which seemed to affect his speech.

“But don’t be fooled by his challenges,” said Junior, “Tony is very smart. When you get to know him further you will understand what I mean.”

Lola smiled and said, “He has such a beautiful smile. His smile is melting my heart. I have almost forgotten about my problems.”

“I’m not surprised. Tony’s got charms.”

Junior explained to Tony that Lola would be riding with them, and that she would be dropped in her home first. Tony only nodded in understanding and got behind the wheel.

Usually, Junior would have sat beside Tony at the front seat, but because of the girl, he chose to sit in the back beside her.

“He actually drives well,” observed Lola.

“How do you know? Can you drive?”

She smiled and shook her head. “Of course I can’t drive. I have never been behind the wheel. I don’t even have any interest in learning to drive. I’m comfortable being at the backseat and allowing the driver to do the job.”

“Could you be lazier?”

Lola laughed.

They continued gisting all through the journey. Lola told Junior about almost everyone in the class and their characters. Junior was surprised about how much Lola knew of the classmates, considering the fact that she was an outcast in the class.

“I spend my free times studying most of them,” she explained. “Each time they don’t bother me, I am amused by the way they treat each other. I know those who are practising boyfriend and girlfriend relationships. I know the ones that like stealing other students’ feeding money. I know the one that writes notes for others and get paid in return. I know the ones that do assignments for other people. I know them all. They don’t know that I know, but I do. None of them has the amount of knowledge I have of the class. I know their deepest secrets – secrets they thought no other person knows.”

“You have no idea how really powerful you are,” Junior commented.

“What are you talking about?”

“You have the weapons to have everyone in the class eating out of your palms. Yet you are the one begging for the crumbs of their tables. It’s so ironical. If I knew what you do, I would be the king of that class. Even the one they call Vincent would be taking orders from me.”

Lola laughed. She thought Junior was only joking. She could not imagine a world where Vincent would take orders from anyone – not even from the principal or teachers. In most cases, it was the other way around.

While the car drove both Lola and Junior out of the school gate, Vincent appeared from his hiding and watched the car disappear. He was frowning. What business did the new boy have with Lola Onuka? Where were they going? Who was the driver of that car? Vincent would have loved to follow the car and find out where his two classmates were being taken, but there was no car he could use to tail them.

But he was determined to prove himself to Junior Black. First of all, he went to the back of the school and changed into new clothes he had hidden somewhere in the bush. This was what he usually did at the close of school each day. He was never seen outside the school compound in his school uniform. He would wear mufty from home and change to the school uniform in the bush early in the morning. He would also change back to the mufty after school hours in the afternoon –just like he did now.

He took to the street and entered a dreaded part of the street. This was an area already known to be dominated by the lowlest scums of the earth. It was an abode of thieves, thugs, garage touts, hemp smokers, and cult boys. This was where Vincent always felt at home, because most of the inhabitants of this place were his friends. It was here he was initiated into cultism. His uncle, the proprietor of Elizabeth’s College, had rented an apartment for him, but Vincent preferred living with his illiterate and weed-puffing buddies in this godforsaken place.

He explained to his fellow cultist friends about a boy in his class who disrespected him.

“I think there is something he believes in,” explained Vincent.

“And you couldn’t break him into pieces?” said one young man smoking hemp. Two of his upper front teeth were missing.

“I think he’s dangerous.”

“So what do you want to do about him?”

“Let’s teach him a lesson.”
