Please Advise On Career Path. by ravensckar(m): 9:49pm On Aug 21, 2022
Good evening to everyone, please I'm here to seek advice for my kid brother. He said he wants to go into I.T (Coding, Programming, Software developing, etc). But the thing is that he's a complete novice.

As a show of support for him, I bought him a laptop last month. Now, I'm here to seek for advice from our dear nairalanders on how to go about it. Where does he need to start from? Where can he acquire these skills? What are the career prospects of the I.T field. Please I'm here to seek advice and guidance because me too I'm a complete novice when it comes to stuff like this. He looks up to me and I don't want to mislead him. If you know anything or anyone that I can talk to, kindly advice. Thanks.

Wow!
i like your courage, must be a good brother.

foremost, he should understand that IT is vast with lots more to learn.

If he want to learn app/web development, i suggest he start with basic programming languages e.g ''C#, C++, OBJECT C, KOTLIN, JAVASCRIPT, JAVA, NODE JS, SWIFT,PYTHON, MYSQL, RUBY&SHELL, DJANGO'' ETC.
He can learn aforemention programming language codes for free on
WWW.W3SCHOOLS.COM
Or he should enroll to programming/UX course on
WWW.ALISON.COM

Firstly, you'd most likely get advice from people with technologies, which will come from their personal bias, and it's normal.

Secondly, Tech is broad, very broad. The first stage for him, is to make extensive research on the fields available, and then he can follow the path. I'll list them below.

1. Software Engineering /Development:
Under this, you have what we call the front and backend. The first is what you experience as a user, just as you're interacting with nairaland page. The second is the logic that stores all our info in a database, give functionality, and handle the logic.

I.Front end skills: HTML/CSS-JavaScript- Framework(React/Vue/Angular) then 2 solid projects and he's employable .

II.Backend: There are various languages, so I'll just list them and their frameworks.

a. Languages/Frameworks: JavaScript (Node.js), Java(Spring/SpringBoot), Ruby(Ruby and Rails), python(Django), PHP(Laravel),

b. Databases: SQL, MySQL, Postgress, etc
c. Unit and integration testing, depending on the language
d. One cloud provider(AWS, GCP or Azure)
e. Build 2 solid projects implementing the above skills with a real-life kind of problem.

With the above, in 8-12months, he should get an entry level role with skills above 90% of new developers in Nigeria with juniors tag.

To get this, please get him a course by Angela Yu on Udemy, or the new Meta course on Coursera.

2. Mobile App Development: Kotlin/Java, flutter or ReactNative

3. UI/UX

4. Data Analytics

5. Product design

As I said earlier, seat him down and make extensive research together. You'll notice I delved on the first option well, that's because it's my field. I won't ask him to pick it just yet, because his interest might be more aligned to either of the other 4 listed.

It's a long ride, but he's about to change his life for the good.

Wow! I'm truly marveled! May the Almighty bless you for this apt response. This is quite an eye-opener!

I'll do just what you suggest; we will both research separately, then, sit down and cross-fertilize ideas. Afterwhich which we will proceed from there. Thank you once again, I sincerely appreciate your prompt and apt response. Nairaland is truly a family!

PS- meanwhile sir, I'll send you a pm (if it's o.k with you) because I'll definitely need further guidance.

I'd always advice you find an affinity and work with that. Tech is broad and you might succeed at one and absolutely tank at another.
But for novices, you don't have enough information to even know which you might like, so try them all.

Spend the next couple months just trying some of them and trying to understand how they work and seeing if you like it. You would succeed better when you find one you like and stick to it.

naturally, I would expect an artist to focus more on UI/UX, Frontend, Animation and 3D design
and a mathematician to excel better at Backend as you do more logic than colors.

But if he just wants to chill with the big boys on twitter, then scrap the idea above and just do web dev/app dev like everyone else.

Wishing him luck

Boss, about the java learning path you mentioned not too long ago, I'm trying to follow the path but I need your help with some things. What are the good resources you can recommend for me? And any helpful tips that will make my journey easier and afford costly mistakes. I have an engineering background and I have a maximum of 1 1/2 years to dedicate to learning.

You're right bro! This I.T thing is way too broad. Since yesterday that I posted this, both of us have been reading extensively on where to start from considering the many areas involved. This your suggestion too would help in our search. Thanks once again, I appreciate.

Can a novice in IT field without any knowledge of computer, kickstart a career in product design?

A large portion of Product designers don't have an IT degree. I'm tempted to say 90%. You'd even find it hard to see a CS guy into it. So yes, it's just a skillset
