Does The UK Intend To Reduce/ban The Number Of Students Dependant Visas? by 9jaHustler: 3:59pm On Oct 08, 2022
- UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman recently said that many dependents of international students are not contributing to the growth of the UK economy.
- The Home Secretary in an interview said that the Prime Minister Liz Truss intends to stick to her 2019 election pledge to lower net migration.
- Year ending 2019, that was before the pandemic 37,396 Indians were granted study visas while year ending June 2022, they were 117,965 Indians granted study visas that is 215% increase.
- Similarly 8,384 Nigerians were granted study visa in 2019 but that number rose to 65,929 by year ending June 2022 and that is 686% increase. 34,000 Nigerian students bringing 31,929 dependants.
- But then a Professor of higher education at Oxford University Simon Marginson, argues that international students pay massive fees, and students and their families pour money into the economy.
- A September 2021 report gave an in-depth analysis and revealed the massive contribution of international students to the UK’s economic prosperity.
- It stated that “every part of the UK is financially better off – on average by £390 per person – because of international students”.
-
- The research also shows international students deliver a net economic benefit of £25.9 billion.
- “This figure actually did not include NI and tax contributions of dependents who work here in the UK so likely underestimates the total economic contribution that international students bring to the UK,” said Jamie Arrowsmith, acting director of Universities UK International.
- Well one thing I think is that if they stop giving student’s dependats visa, many intending students who have dependants will prefer to try other countries where they will be allowed to go with their dependants.
- At the moment the government has not said that they will stop giving dependants visa, its just rumors and speculations flying around.
- Do you think that they will stop or reduce the number of dependant visas?
