How Do You Cope With Prepaid Metering? by booblacain(m): 11:50am On Oct 21, 2022
I am renting and moving into a new place that uses prepaid metering. Coming from a house without prepaid meter and I use a lot of hot plate for cooking. I am really wondering how it going to affect me.

I just want to know how you guys that are already using prepaid meter cope, especially if you are using electric cooker / hot plate. How do you manage your cost of electricity? Is there really a big difference?

Prepaid is pay as you use.

I will advise you against the use of hot plate and electric cooker with your prepaid meter. Those items consume at faster rate than anything.

I have been using prepaid meter over 8years now.
You can use hot plate and electric cooker for emergency because they consume they consume at high rate

But your prepaid meter with Tv, bulb, fan, refrigerator, sound system, you are good to go

If u are still buying appliances buy everything smart inverter
AC, TV (smart), fridge (smart inverter), microwave (inverter), that's the way to go

How can a prepaid meter have outstanding?

How can a prepaid meter have outstanding?
If you were owing on postpaid billing, when you are given prepaid metre, the outstanding bill in the postpaid is transferred to the prepaid. So whenever you recharge a certain percentage is deducted to pay for the outstanding bills.

Don't use electric stove.

You need to buy energy saving appliances. So don't use those 60 watts, 100 Watts bulb. Go for 5 watts, 10 watts bulbs. Check the power rating of your refrigerator to know if it consumes more power. If you have spare money that can afford to get you a fridge that consumes less power, go for it. Turn off your fridge when it's cold enough.

How can a prepaid meter have outstanding?

During the process of applying for a prepaid meter, you have the option of transferring old debt from an old post paid account into the new meter (2nd screenshot). The meter also accumulates the debt of the pre-bundled recharge token.

If it is a fresh account, then you only pay for the pre-bundled recharge token.

Thank you. I will have to use the hot plate for a month to see if the cost is something I can manage.

https://www.ikejaelectric.com/energy-consumption-domestic-appliances/

It costs an average of N40/hour to use an electric plate. In comparison, a refrigerator costs N2/hour.

Use this BILLING CALCULATOR to estimate the cost of consumption in a month. Change Tariff to R2S.
