Good morning my people.
There is a serious problem that is currently destroying my brother. My brother is part of those that went through the Nigerian law school one year programme. Their results came out yesterday and he passed four out of the five courses and so he was given a conditional pass.
Now, the crux of the matter is that my brother is looking suicidal. I know how hard working my brother is. The Nigerian law school is also a wonderful institution but there is something wrong with the grading system.
The pressure that the students experienced at law school is better imagined. For every law school session students die "go and verify". They die from the pressure and stress from the Nigerian law school.
Students that spent five years in their respective universities without losing anyone due to stress, will come to Nigerian law school for a period of say ten months and at least two must die from stress.
There has been a law that abolished conditional pass, it is painful that it is not being implemented. Please if the Nigerian law schools cannot adhere to their own law how then, do they expect others to adhere to the Nigerian law. Charity they say begins at home. My brother is home looking dejected, shying away from calls from colleagues.
The resources and time wastage hurts. It seems that his life is looking bleak.
Please, I am appealing to well meaning Nigerians to help beg the Nigerian law school to implement the law that abolished conditional pass. Please help the Nigerian youths. People are suicidal already from various pains they cannot talk about.
NB: Conditional pass means he will have to wait for the resit students which is like mid next year to take that one paper he failed meanwhile his set will be called to bar by next month.

Please somebody say something, the law school school grading system needs to be reviewed.

I feel your plight. It's just that in this country, it is believed that suffering is the condition for any success. Also, they hold firm to the maxim: " as it was in the beginning, so is now, ever shall be..." No desire for change!

Sue the law school then. or if possible, take your case to the Nigerian bar association. Also, make sure you understand the law regarding the conditional.... because it's possible there are conditions attached to the law

The condition is that the person passes four out of the five courses and brother failed just one.

I don't know about this conditional pass you are referring to and since we don't know all, I will be interested if you show me the law where such was abolished, and I say this not to spite what you have said here. This is necessary so we can all scrutinize and see if that is applicabe in this situation. To the best of my knowledge, before, during and after we left the law School, it has always been the case that you pass all before you can be said to have passed and ready for the Call to Bar.

But I think youre focus is wrong in light of this situation with your brother. Your brother is depressed. But this is life. Let's even thank God that in his own case, he failed just one subject. I know of people during our time who could not pass even up to 3 times. But today, they are lawyers after they finally passed. This is life.

I know that for him in this case, his mates will become his seniors at the bar, and so what?, that is life. Do you know in my own case at the university, no carry over etc, but when it was time to go to the Law School, some of us could not get forms and so our mates became our seniors at the bar. Such is life.

Your brother should not get depressed with this, you should encourage him. That some one is your senior at the bar does not mean he will be ahead of you in life or even in the profession itself. Again, let's thank God it was just one subject. So let him get over it and prepare for the exame, by the Grace of God, he will make it.

The first thing I will say is that you are the one who got the conditional pass not your brother!
Secondly, I understand how it feels, but I think you should focus more on how to pass the course failed.
Remember, there are many people that passed under the same stress and condition who didn't get the conditional pass like you?
So instead of wasting time blaming the system which has been there for ages before you were even born, it is better to invest more time on the course you failed to avoid failing again and adding more fuel to the fire.
If you keep on blaming the grading system, how are you going to pass it?
Alternatively, since you are so sure about the flaw of the grading system and you studied law in the university, you can explore your legal skill and sue the school management and see how it goes.

What would say for medical students who resit exams? What of those who write ICAN for 10 years before qualifying as an accountant?.

Tell him that lgraduating from law school this year doesn't determine how far he will succeed in life. He should out forward effort and ace it next year.

Some didn't even pass any subject, he is one of the brilliant minds available. Give it the next shot and ace the remaining papers.

I understand your reservations, encourage him to ace the remaining. He is doing well.

For your brother, let him take it in good faith and wait to resit. Sometimes success is upsidedown, and this re-sit will be his success story for greatness and great people do have stories. Like in my case. I had delay in graduating (not because of carryover), but ASUU strike and renovation going on in the school then. Seven months, after graduation before I was mobilized for NYSC (another delay). But one year after NYSC I got a job with Federal Government Parastatal. Please tell him not to be hard on himself. Let him critically think what makes him to fail that particular course. And besides he is only having one course to write, let him use this opportunity to settle his grudges with the course by scoring 100%.

Sometimes you have to be silent cause silence sometimes makes shallow minded people look intelligent.
If only you know how hardworking my brother is. If only you know the odds against him, odds that could break the heart of a lion. Can you at least be kind with yours?

Even though your brother was unable to clear all his subjects at a go, he should be thankful that it was a conditional pass and not an outright failure. I know it can be disheartening considering all the effort put into studies but he needs to know that this is only a temporary set back which doesn't determine his success in the profession.

The rationale behind the grading system is to ensure that lawyers are well grounded in all subjects taught thus the negative marking.

Your brother should get his acts together, retake the course he failed and move on with his life

If you fall pick yourself back up and try again.. no need to get depressed.. for bar exam past questions is your friend.

An institution of law is unlikely to break an established law so the law you are talking about is probably a rumour /beer parlour jist

If you as a man are weak in a crisis, you are weak indeed.

Focus on that course and know it more than the professor so you can pass it..

The only thing you can do for your brother in a situation like this is to let him be, unless he outrightly asks for your help, let him experience the emotions that come with failing... That way he'll be able to process it and know where he went wrong.

I was also a student in his set and I passed with a 2.1, before the results came out I doubted myself greatly, i knew how ruthless the marking scheme is, I had nightmares and crazy visions of failing but in the end I can only glorify God for the excellent grade I got.

Also, while I'm not totally against the use of past questions I think they should be used with caution, most people who failed in this set relied solely on past questions, the exams came and we were faced with a different set of questions. He should only use past questions after attaining an adequate comprehension of the course. I covered each course about 3 times before the bar finals, I solved more than 10 years of previous bar finals questions before the exam.

I'm guessing the course he failed is Corporate law practice or Civil Litigation...most of my friends also had issues with these courses. Feel free to send me a DM I'll be delighted to tutor him on any area of the course he finds incomprehensible.

Tell him to cheer up, he'll pass the next time.

Tell your brother not give up rather he should read hard. That he failed a course doesn't mean he wasn't brilliant. Just a little mistake might have made him failed that course. He should mingle with other persons
